HOT TODDY

Hot Toddy image

Whether you're sick in bed or fresh off the slopes, a hot toddy warms everything up. The classic formula of whiskey, sugar and hot water is like the steamy cousin of an old-fashioned, but these days, a lot of other ingredients (citrus juice, apple cider, various spices) get added in the name of innovation, with mixed results. This version cozies up to the original, with a few optional additions based on preference. First, warm the mug with hot water, which primes the vessel to hold heat longer, yielding a truly hot toddy to the last sip. Then add scotch or bourbon, or for a modern twist, rum, cognac or amaro. Stir in a little honey, maple syrup or Demerara sugar, add hot water and stir to dissolve. Garnish with lemon peel and spices, if you like.

Provided by Rebekah Peppler

Categories     cocktails

Time 5m

Yield 1 drink

Number Of Ingredients 5

Boiling water, as needed
2 ounces scotch, bourbon, rye, Irish whiskey, dark rum, cognac or amaro
3/4 ounce light honey, such as acacia, or maple syrup (or 1 teaspoon Demerara sugar)
1 (3-inch) lemon peel
Cinnamon stick and whole star anise, to garnish (optional)

Steps:

  • Fill a 6-ounce heatproof mug or glass with boiling water and set aside, 1 minute. Pour out the water then add the spirit and honey to the warmed glass. Top with boiling water and stir until the honey is dissolved. Garnish with the lemon peel and cinnamon stick or star anise, if desired. Let cool slightly before enjoying.

5 VARIATIONS ON THE CLASSIC HOT TODDY RECIPE - ORGANIC ...

From organicauthority.com
Estimated Reading Time 3 mins
  • Use apple cider instead of honey and water. My personal favorite “toddy” is not a true toddy but a delicious variation. In this version, the honey and water are replaced with apple cider—use real cider from the farm if you can find it.
  • Kick up the heat and spice with ginger. Fresh ginger rarely hurts a cocktail, and this is no exception. When boiling your liquid of choice, add a few long slices of thinly sliced ginger to the mix so you make a ginger infusion.
  • Use tea as your mixer liquid. Instead of juice or water as your base toddy mixer, use green, black, or chai tea and enjoy the lightly herbal zing. Simply brew a strong cup of tea in hot water then use in your toddy as usual.
  • Replace the spirits with vodka. Vodka is rarely used in toddies, but it’s a natural pair for both lemon and honey, so this combination works quite nicely.
  • Go ultra-cinnamon. If you’re a fan of cinnamon—and chances are, if you’re into toddies and wintry drinks, you are—then you’ll love this variation. Imbibe Magazine features a recipe for homemade cinnamon syrup that you can use in place of honey to make your classic toddy wonderfully spiced.

BEST SCOTCH WHISKIES TO MAKE A CLASSIC HOT TODDY | MEN'S ...

From mensjournal.com
Published 2022-01-07
  • GlenDronach 12. If you’re looking for a sweeter hot toddy, we suggest you use GlenDronach 12 as a base. This beloved single malt whisky is aged in both Spanish Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks.
  • Dewar’s White Label. If you’re using a whisky to mix with, it’s difficult to beat the value to quality ratio of Dewar’s White Label. Using Aberfeldy as its main whisky, this blend is made up of over 40 different single malt whiskies.
  • Glenmorangie The Original. Glenmorangie The Original is not only the best single malt for beginners, it also might be the best whisky for a hot toddy, period.
  • The Famous Grouse. You might not know it, but the best-selling Scotch in Scotland is The Famous Grouse. If this blended Scotch is good enough for them, it’s definitely good enough for us.
  • Monkey Shoulder. If you polled bartenders on their favorite Scotch whiskies, you’d get plenty of votes for Monkey Shoulder. This highly mixable whisky is a blend of whiskies from Kininvie, Balvenie, and Glenfiddich.
  • Ardbeg 10. If you’re looking for a smoky kick, you can do much worse than Ardbeg 10. This non-chill-filtered, peat-smoked whisky is aged for 10 years in ex-bourbon barrels.
  • Cutty Sark Prohibition Edition. Cutty Sark is a big name in the blended whisky world. You can’t go wrong with inserting its flagship blended whisky here.
  • Aberlour 12 Double Cask. One of the best beginner single malts (and great mixing whiskies) on the market, Aberlour 12 Double Cask gets its name because it’s literally matured in two casks: American oak barrels and seasoned sherry butts.
  • The Glenlivet 12. There’s a reason that even if you don’t know anything about single malt Scotch, you’ve heard the name Glenlivet. Its flagship expression is The Glenlivet 12, a whisky aged for 12 years in a combination of European and American oak barrels.
  • Bruichladdich The Classic Laddie. Many people associate the Scottish Inner Hebrides island of Islay exclusively with peated, smoky whiskies. But there are a few un-peated, memorable whiskies perfect for mixing and sipping.
