At first I was skeptical of 'dessert' hummus. Then I tried some. I was hooked. It is awesome on apples, strawberries, pretzels and lots of other things.

1 (15 ounce) can chickpeas (garbanzo beans), rinsed and drained
½ cup unsweetened dark cocoa powder
½ cup white sugar
3 tablespoons olive oil
3 tablespoons creamy natural peanut butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
½ teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons water, or more if needed

Steps:

  • Combine chickpeas, cocoa powder, sugar, olive oil, peanut butter, vanilla extract, and salt in a food processor; blend, scraping down sides as needed, until smooth. Begin adding water while processor is running and blend until desired consistency is reached.

This secretly healthy chocolate hummus recipe is surprisingly delicious.

1 can black beans
3 1/2 tbsp regular or dutch cocoa powder
1/2 cup sweetener of choice
1/3 cup fat source of choice (see note)
1/4 tsp salt
2 tsp pure vanilla extract
optional chocolate chips or add-ins of choice

Steps:

  • *Feel free to sub chickpeas or white beans for the black beans. Or you can use 1 1/2 cups cooked beans instead of canned.To make the chocolate hummus, drain and rinse beans well. Combine all ingredients except add-ins in a food processor until completely smooth like brownie batter. Stir in chocolate chips if using. (A few commenters had success with a blender, but a food processor will yield a smoother texture.) Leftovers can be covered and refrigerated 4-5 days. 1 can of garbanzo beans, drained and rinsed well (or homemade beans from scratch)
1/4 cup cashews (level if pieces, slightly heaped if whole)
1/4 cup + 2 Tbsp maple syrup*
2 tsp vanilla extract (homemade vanilla extract)
3 Tbsp rolled oats
1/8 - 1/4 tsp salt*
1/4 - 1/3 cup chocolate chips

Steps:

  • Combine all the ingredients except the chocolate chips in a blender or food processor. See notes for the maple syrup and salt.
  • Blend or puree the ingredients until everything is smooth and combined well, about 2 minutes.
  • Fold in the chocolate chips and serve; alternatively, store the hummus plain and add chocolate chips just before serving.
