  • My freezer is making strange noises. LIKELY CULPRIT: The evaporator fan motor needs to be replaced. Keep in mind, though, that not all freezers will make exactly the same sound when this happens.
  • There’s frost buildup in my freezer. LIKELY CULPRIT: The defrost heater needs to be replaced. Depending on where the frost is forming, it could be due to many correctable conditions.
  • There’s a small amount of water leaking on the floor next to my freezer. LIKELY CULPRIT: The defrost drain has frozen over and needs to be defrosted and cleaned.
  • My freezer won’t run. LIKELY CULPRIT: The electronic controls need to be replaced — but first check if the power light indicator and freezer light are working.
  • The temperature is too warm. LIKELY CULPRIT: The defrost thermostat needs to be replaced if its contacts aren’t properly functioning. The normal freezer temperature is between 0ºF and 5ºF.

  • Ice or Frost Buildup. Freezers have an auto-defrost feature to prevent the build up of frost inside the unit. If you notice significant amounts of frost or ice in the rear of the freezer, the problem could be a faulty defrost timer, thermostat, or defrost heater.
  • Leaking Water. A freezer’s defrost mechanisms could also be responsible for small leaks as well. If you notice a puddle of water on the floor near the rear of the unit, the defrost drain could be choked with ice.
  • Insufficient Cooling. Most of the time, insufficient cooling is due to a thermostat that is set too high. Simply readjust to the recommended setting, which is usually around 0° F. If the temperature doesn’t change, you may need to replace your freezer’s thermostat or temperature sensor.
  • Strange Noises. It’s normal for freezers to make a modest amount of noise. Icemakers, defrost cycles, and evaporative fans make all kinds of clicks, whirs, and trickles.
  • Failure to Turn On. If your freezer fails to draw power entirely, check that the appliance is plugged in and that the circuit doesn’t need to be reset.

5 WAYS TO TROUBLESHOOT A CHEST FREEZER NOT FREEZING

From removeandreplace.com
  • Is the chest freezer getting power? The simple reasons are the chest freezer might have had a power outage or is not plugged into a power outlet. So be sure the freezer is plugged into power and the breaker to the chest freezer power outlet is not tripped after a power outage.
  • Are the condenser coils dirty? Another likely reason is that your freezer’s condenser coils are dirty and restricting the freezer’s overall cooling capacity.
  • Does the freezer have frost built up? The coils are be clogged and built up with frost. This prevents cold air from circulating. The freezer’s self-defrosting mechanism could be the problem.
  • Is the door gasket causing the problem? A bad door gasket can cause the door to not seal properly. If cold air leaks from the freezer door, the freezer will not be able to freeze the food.
  • Is the compressor start relay faulty? The compressor’s power is provided by the start (capacitor) relay, which is a part that aids in the functioning of the compressor.
