This is the classic puffed wheat square with a spicy twist. It pairs great with coffee and will have everyone coming back for 'one more piece'!

1 cup brown sugar
½ cup butter
½ cup corn syrup
¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon ground cloves
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
8 cups puffed wheat cereal

Steps:

  • Butter a 9x13-inch pan.
  • Heat brown sugar, butter, corn syrup, cocoa powder, cinnamon, and cloves in a saucepan over medium-high heat until butter is melted, stirring constantly. Bring cocoa mixture to a rolling boil; boil for 1 minute.
  • Remove cocoa mixture from heat; stir in vanilla extract. Fold puffed wheat cereal into cocoa mixture. Pour cereal mixture into prepared pan; press evenly into the pan. Allow to cool completely before cutting into squares, about 30 minutes.

Puffed wheat squares are a classic, easy treat that always reminds me of childhood. They're chewy, gooey, full of chocolate, and you can whip up a batch of these no bake treats in no time.

2/3 cup unsalted butter
2/3 cup corn syrup
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup cocoa powder (, use 1/3 cup for a less chocolate-y flavor)
9 cups puffed wheat cereal*

Steps:

  • Grease a 9x13 inch baking pan.
  • Add the butter, corn syrup, brown sugar and cocoa powder to a large sauce pan over low-medium heat.
  • Melt everything together while stirring gently.
  • Bring the mixture to a gently boil for 1 minute, then remove from the heat.
  • Stir in the puffed wheat cereal.
  • Spoon the batter into the prepared pan and press down (I use a lightly greased spatula for this.
  • Allow to firm up at room temperature for 60 minutes, then cut into bars.

I couldn't believe this quick snack was not a part of Recipezaar yet!! I grew up loving this and now my kids enjoy it too. I like to vary the sprinkles to match the season. Wilton has some awesome festive sprinkles that I like to use. Adding the cocoa will produce a chocolate flavour and omitting it will give a caramel flavour.Cook and prep time doesn't include cool time.

1/4 cup butter or 1/4 cup margarine
3/4 cup corn syrup
1 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon cocoa (optional)
8 cups puffed wheat cereal
candy sprinkles

Steps:

  • Measure puffed wheat into a large bowl.
  • Melt butter in a saucepan.
  • Add syrup, sugar, cocoa.
  • When mixture begins to boil, boil for 3 minutes and then remove from heat.
  • Add vanilla.
  • Pour over puffed wheat and mix well.
  • Press into a 9X12 inch cake pan.
  • scatter sprinkles while still warm and pat down to be sure they will stick.
  • Cool completely.

Steps:

  • Butter two 9 x 13 inch pans.
  • Melt margarine in large saucepan over medium heat.
  • Add brown sugar, salt, corn syrup, cocoa powder.
  • Bring to a full boil, stirring constantly. Boil for one minute, still stirring.
  • Remove from heat. Add vanilla if desired, then stir in cereal.
  • Pour into prepared pan and press down evenly. Cut into squares when cool.
