No drippings are needed for this very simple and super quick homemade brown gravy that's perfect for mashed potatoes, meatloaf or even French fries. You'll never use packet gravy again.

Number Of Ingredients 6

2 cups beef stock
3 tablespoons cornstarch
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon soy sauce
1 beef bouillon cube, crushed
1 tablespoon heavy cream

Steps:

  • Whisk together the beef stock, cornstarch, onion powder, soy sauce and bouillon cube in a medium saucepan. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, whisking occasionally, and cook until slightly thickened, about 1 minute. Turn off the heat and whisk in the heavy cream.

This gravy tastes like the stuff I grew up eating on my mashed potatoes as a kid, but it happens to be vegan and has zero artery clogging saturated animal fat.

3 cups vegetable stock
1/3 cup soy sauce, low sodium, or amino acids
1 tablespoon vegan worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon maple syrup, optional
1 teaspoon garlic powder
2 teaspoons onion powder
1 teaspoon basil
1 teaspoon parsley
1.5 teaspoon smoked paprika
pinch pepper
5+ tablespoons thickener, cornstarch, arrowroot, potato starch
1/2 cup water

Steps:

  • In a medium saucepan, bring all ingredients EXCEPT thickener (arrowroot powder, cornstarch, or flour) to a boil, then reduce heat to medium and allow to simmer for approximately 5 minutes.
  • In a separate small bowl, whisk together the thickener of your choice and water.
  • After allowing the pot on the stove to simmer for 5-minutes, pour the thickener slurry in with other ingredients and begin to whisk immediately.
  • As the gravy begins to thicken, continue whisking constantly until desired thickness is achieved. This will not take long. Then remove from heat.
  • The gravy is ready to be poured over any and everything!

¼ cup all-purpose flour
2 cups vegetable broth

Steps:

  • Heat oil in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Add mushrooms and saute until soft, about 8 minutes. Add flour and stir until mushrooms are evenly coated. Slowly pour in vegetable broth, stirring continuously, until flour has completely dissolved and is mixed into the broth. Add salt, pepper, garlic powder, and thyme; stir to combine.

1/3 cup all purpose flour (I used Pillsbury brand all purpose gluten-free flour)
2 tablespoons avocado oil
2 tablespoons nutritional yeast flakes
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
2 cups vegetable broth or 3 vegan bouillon cubes + 3 cups of water
2 tablespoons Bragg's liquid aminos

Steps:

  • Heat the avocado oil in a saucepan over medium heat.
  • Add the all-purpose flour and whisk, constantly until the flour starts browning, about 3-5 minutes.
  • Add the nutritional yeast flakes, garlic powder, onion powder, Bragg's Liquid Aminos, and vegetable broth.
  • Whisk continuously to prevent clumps. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until thickened.
  • Serve immediately over mashed potatoes, or something else that requires a delicious, rich, and flavorful gravy.

2 tablespoons margarine
1 diced onion
2 tablespoons flour
1 teaspoon garlic salt
2 teaspoons cornstarch
1 1/2 cups vegetable broth
2 tablespoons soy sauce (I used Braggs liquid aminos)
1 tablespoon nutritional yeast

Steps:

  • Heat the margarine in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Sauté the onion for a couple of minutes, or until transparent.
  • Add the flour and garlic salt and sauté this mixture for about five to ten more minutes.
  • Add in the vegetable broth and cornstarch, making sure to stir well to prevent lumps.
  • Bring this to a boil and once you have done this you want to reduce to a simmer and continue cooking, stirring frequently.
  • Add in the nutritional yeast and soy sauce and reduce the heat even further, cooking for just a few more minutes.

2 carrots, finely diced
2 celery sticks, finely chopped
2 bay leaves
1 large thyme sprig
large knob of butter
1 tbsp sugar
2 tbsp plain flour
1 tsp Marmite (optional, but it does add colour and depth)
1 tbsp tomato purée
2 tbsp red wine vinegar
1l vegetable stock (or chicken or beef stock, if you prefer)
soy sauce, to taste

Steps:

  • Fry the veg and herbs in the butter for 10-12 mins until the vegetables start to brown. Scatter over the sugar and continue to cook until sticky and caramelised.
  • Stir in the flour until sandy, then add the Marmite, if using, tomato purée and vinegar. Pour over the stock, then simmer everything together until you have a thickened sauce.
  • Sieve, then add soy sauce to season and colour. Use straightaway or cool and freeze.
