Victory Garden Veggies. People were encouraged to grow their own food. And these homegrown victory gardens helped lessen the negative effect of war rations.
Canned Food. Canned foods were staples in almost every home during World War II. In fact, people grew much of their own produce in victory gardens and then canned most of it at home.
Kraft Macaroni and Cheese. Some brand items were more available than others. Kraft Macaroni and Cheese was a really popular option for meat and dairy products, and 80 million boxes were sold in 1943.
Butter Substitutes. Real butter was hard to find, so substitutions came up. One popular one was oleomargarine. According to National Geographic, “This was helped along by improvements in the manufacturing process — margarine was now made from hydrogenated vegetable oils rather than animal fats — and by a clever side-step of the yellow ban in which white margarine was sold with an included capsule of yellow food coloring.”
Cottage Cheese. Cottage cheese sales also increased tremendously as it became a substitute for meat, of all things. Sales went from 110 million pounds in 1930 to 500 million pounds in 1944.
Loaf Food. Food in “loaf” form was popular. This included something called Economy Loaf, which was a mix of basically vegetables, eggs, and spices. According to Time, which referenced a World War II recipe, the loaf is garnished with “additional egg slices, or with broiled bacon, if desired.”
Woolton Pie. Woolton pie became popular in Britain and then made its way to the U.S.A. It was basically a vegetarian pie with lots of potatoes, and was a nutritious way to feed the family.
Apple Brown Betty. Apple Brown Betty was one way to make a sweet dessert that didn’t include sugar. This was super important, since sugar could be hard to come by.
Wartime Drippings. Wartime drippings were one way to make the most of meat shortages. The drippings were bacon fat that was collected when people made bacon.
Casseroles. Casseroles were really popular options. They could be made with food that was grown in the garden, and could be satisfying and filling, even with rationing.

In the years of post-war austerity the British public were treated to the dubious pleasures of whale and horse meat together with snoek, a strange and unloved tinned fish from South Africa.
