3/4 cups Shortening/Butter
1 cup Sugar
1 Egg
1/4 cup brer rabbit molasses
2 cups Flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon Cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon cloves
1/2 teaspoon Ginger
1/2 teaspoon Salt

Steps:

  • 1. Cream Shortening/Butter, Sugar, Egg, and Molasses. Add remaining ingredients and chill for several hours 2. Roll into 1 inch balls and roll in granulated sugar. 3. Place cookie dough balls on an ungreased cookie sheet and bake at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 8-10 minutes or until the bottom is lightly brown. best if baked until chewy, not crunchy. DONT OVERCOOK

Delicious, soft, melt-in-your-mouth cookies. This is actually a vintage WWII Brer Rabbit "Molasses Sugar Cookie" recipe from when sugar was rationed. As odd as it seems, DO use butter-flavored SHORTENING and NOT butter, the taste is buttery anyway and shortening will give you that perfect texture. Chilling the dough is also a must. Original recipe says "yields 4 dozen", but we only end up with 2 dozen. Prep time doesn't include chilling time. Family Note: Memo is Mom-Mom's mother: Verdis Pierce Reasoner.

3/4 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup unsulphured molasses
1 large egg (not jumbo)
2 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 teaspoon clove
1/2 teaspoon ginger
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt

Steps:

  • Melt shortening, cool. Add sugar, molasses and egg; beat well.
  • Sift dry ingredients, add to first mixture and mix well.
  • Chill thoroughly (for at least a few hours, we chill overnight).
  • Form into 1" balls, roll in granulated sugar and place on greased cookie sheet 2-3 inches apart.
  • Bake at 375 degrees for 7-8 minutes. Cookies should be light, pillowy and soft, not dark and crispy.

  • Whisk together the all-purpose flour, ground cloves, ground ginger, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt. Set to the side.
  • Using your hand mixer or stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat the vegetable oil and granulated sugar together on medium-high speed until well blended. Add in the full flavored molasses and egg.
  • Switching the mixer speed to low, gradually add in the whisked dry ingredients until just combined.
  • Cover the mixing bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate the molasses cookie dough for a minimum of 2 hours (or until it's easy to shape).
