  • Apple cider vinegar (ACV) This is the new kid on the block when it comes to health. This new magic drink (which is actually an ancient remedy, like most of the new magic healthy food) improves overall health in many ways
  • Bone broth. Why bone broths? Because it tastes really good, that’s why! Other than my personal taste, bone broth is excellent after a fast since it contains lots of electrolytes.
  • Spinach, kale. It might seem like an easy one and, yes, it is. When fasting, you might be depleted of some nutrients and vitamins. Kale and spinach are full of them, including
  • Eggs. Eggs are a great way to get lots of proteins with a small amount of food. It’s great when breaking a fast because: The protein can help prevent muscle loss.
  • Nuts, chia seeds. I could have added almond, flax seeds, helm seeds, pecan to this list. Again, you’ll be depleted of nutrients, so getting vitamin-rich food such as nuts and seeds is a great way to restore nutrient balance.
  • Fish. For a first meal, if you want to thread things lightly, you could try to have a fish broth instead of fish meat. But eating fish on your first meal shouldn’t be too much of a problem.
  • Broccoli, cauliflower. Broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts are all cruciferous vegetables, and they’re particularly rich in fiber, nutrients, and vitamins.
  • Watermelon. First off, I’m not a huge fan of fruits to break a fast. I love fruits, but they contain fructose. Even though, when breaking a fast with fruit, your body will actually break down the fructose to restore your glycogen stores, since they’ve been emptied by the fast, it’s still not the best source of energy.
  • Banana. As I said earlier, fruit might not be the best way to break a fast, because of the way fructose is metabolized in our body. But after some reading, I can say that banana could be a good food to break a fast.
  • Unsweetened Yogurt, Sauerkraut, Kimchi. Fermented foods are great for your gut bacteria. After fasting for a few days, eating fermented foods will help your digestive tract to be repopulated with good bacteria and enzymes that it was stripped off from the fast.

  • Avocado. Healthy fats are a good choice when it comes to breaking your fast. Fasting helps put you in ketosis. When you break your fast with healthy fats, you are maintaining ketosis and keeping your body in fat-burning mode.
  • Coconut Oil or MCT Oil. A fast makes you more insulin sensitive, so it’s a good idea to break your fast with fat first particularly if your goal is weight loss.
  • Lean Protein. Combining lean protein with some greens will constitute a good first meal. Make sure you keep your portions small and consume less than 500 calories.
  • Nut Butter. Nuts may be hard to digest after a fast. However, nut butter is easier to digest and provides a good source of healthy fats. Try breaking your fat with a tablespoon of almond butter.
  • Cooked Cruciferous Vegetables. Cooked vegetables tend to be easier to digest. Cruciferous vegetables are a powerhouse of nutrients. Try consuming 3 cups of cruciferous vegetables each day.
  • Green Juices. Green juices provide your body with an abundance of vitamins, minerals, and enzymes without your body having to break down the fiber. Since your body is more insulin sensitive after a fast, make sure your juice is not too sweet, but freshly made green juices may be an excellent way to break your fast.
  • Bone Broth. Bone broth is easy to digest and filling. It is rich in calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus. It contains collagen and the amino acids your body will use to repair itself further.
  • Leafy Greens. Leafy greens are essential foods to consume to provide your body with the nutrients it needs. It’s a good practice to make sure you consume 3 cups of leafy greens every single day.
  • Soups. Soups made from bone broth will provide you with all the benefits of bone broth and the added nutrition from other foods on this list. Make a soup using cruciferous vegetables and some lean protein for example.
  • Melons. Eating fruits to break a fast is an excellent option for athletes who want to get back into muscle-building mode. Melons, in particular, are rich in electrolytes and water.

  • Water. Can you imagine drinking a glass of water right after a fast? It’s definitely not the first thing that comes to mind for most people. With all that hunger pangs pulling at your intestines, what will water do for you?
  • Fish. If you’re being fair to yourself, fasting means you’ll have to eat a limited amount of food than you’re used to in a day. If that is the case, it’s in your best interest to eat something that can replenish your energy and body nutrients more than most foods.
  • Watermelon. Again, water is one of the best things you can take right after a fast, and so is watermelon. Watermelon is mostly water, so you can count on it to boost your hydration.
  • Avocado. If your purpose for fasting is to lose weight, then it may seem counterproductive to break your fast with avocado which is very high in calories.
  • Vegetable Soup. This is another easy to digest stomach friendly food that can help you get by after a fast. This is particularly a good option if you end your fast towards the end of the day and you don’t want to eat heavy food to bed.
  • Sweet Potatoes. If you just don’t want to start with water or other lighter foods and fruits after your fast, as healthy as they may be, you can start with potatoes then.
  • Eggs. Eating eggs is a good way to restock your body of lost protein during your fast. It is easy to digest and contains a lot of nutrients, which is exactly what your body needs after a fast.
  • Beans and Legumes. Let’s say you just finished eating some watermelon, you can back it up with beans (or some other forms of legumes) to give you more calories and nutrients.
  • Probiotics. Be it as it may, you’re not the only one being affected when you fast. There are some microorganisms that live inside of you and they expect to be fed properly if you don’t want to piss them off.
  • Nuts. Nuts are high in calories and polyunsaturated fats. They have a notable quantity of calcium, vitamins, magnesium, and other forms of nutrients. Eating nuts right after a fast can help reduce stress levels by neutralizing the free radicals in the body.
