FOODS TO EAT (AND AVOID) WHEN YOUR STOMACH HURTS

From webmd.com
Estimated Reading Time 4 mins
  • When your stomach hurts, cramps, or you feel like you might throw up, the last thing you want to do is eat something that makes it worse. It can be even harder to know what to try if you’ve been vomiting or have diarrhea.
  • If you can’t keep solid food down, there’s no point in trying to eat. Things like sports drinks, clear broth, or coconut water have minerals you need like potassium, calcium, and sodium (salt).
  • They’re easy to digest and have lots of potassium — an important mineral you may start to lose if you have diarrhea or have been vomiting.
  • Make sure it’s plain white rice. Wild, brown, or black rice — generally healthy — are harder to digest, especially on an upset stomach. Starchy, low-fiber foods like white rice also can help firm up your stool and stop the diarrhea that can come along with stomach trouble.
  • It’s easy to digest and has plenty of nutrients, including pectin — a kind of fiber that dissolves in water. It can add bulk to your stool and help get rid of your diarrhea.

SURPRISING SIDE EFFECTS BREAD HAS ON YOUR GUT, SAYS SCIENCE

From eatthis.com
  • It can improve gut health. Choosing high fiber, 100% whole grain bread can improve gut health "because the soluble fiber found in some whole grains is fermented by the good bacteria in the gut to produce short-chain fatty acids," explains registered dietitian Lauren Harris-Pincus, MS, RDN, founder of NutritionStarringYOU.com and author of The Protein-Packed Breakfast Club.
  • Can boost the immune system. Several studies have been conducted to check how gut microbes respond to the consumption of whole grains, including 100% whole grain bread.
  • May help you feel satisfied. There is evidence that suggests that eating whole grains, like 100% whole rye bread and whole wheat bread, can affect gut bacteria and lead to a feeling of fullness (or satiety).
  • May cause abdominal pain, gas, bloating, diarrhea, or constipation. For those with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) "consuming certain fermentable carbohydrates in bread called FODMAPS can cause abdominal pain, gas, bloating, diarrhea or constipation," says Harris-Pincus.
  • Can cause imbalance of the bacteria in your gut. Eating bread that is low in whole grains, like white bread is associated with a condition known as gut dysbiosis, which means it can lead to an imbalance of gut microbes.
