DIFFERENT TYPES OF BLACKSMITH TOOLS
From toolsowner.com
Estimated Reading Time 6 mins
- Forge. Forge is the fire where you heat the iron. Forges come in all shapes and sizes. Some are very sophisticated, while others are rather simple. The key to the forge is its ability to contain the fire you create to heat the metal.
- Hammer. The hammer is used to pound the metal into shape. Most blacksmiths will acquire many specialized hammers throughout their lifetime. However, it is only essential to have one type of hammer to begin working with iron.
- Anvil. Anvil is a sturdy and heavy piece of metal with a flat surface and with some other characteristics (click to read). It is what blacksmiths use to shape and mold all their metalwork.
- Chisel. Okay, now we have a forge, a hammer, and an anvil. But sometimes, we feel the need to cut things. One of the best ways to do that is with a simple chisel.
- Tongs. Tongs, also known as clamps, come in several different shapes and sizes. The blacksmith uses tongs to hold the hot metal while he works on it. He may use a variety of them.
- Punch. Check the video above if you want to see some punches in action. Punches look a lot like chisels, and a beginner can easily mistake them for chisels.
- Hardy tools. Chisels are great, but what if you want to shape the metal more effectively and precisely? Hardy tools are designed to do just that. A hardy tool is an “accessory” that can be inserted in the anvil hardy hole also known as the square hole.
- Cone Mandrel. Check the video above if you want to see a nice variety of cone mandrel sizes. There is also a huge one. Bending things around the horn of the anvil is pretty straightforward and works quite well, but it’s not always ideal.

- The Forge. A forge is a fire or a type of hearth, and it is where you heat your work. You can purchase a ready-made forge or make your own. The important thing is you have a place where you can apply heat to a piece of metal.
- The Anvil. You can probably say, the anvil is the symbol for blacksmithing. Throughout the ages, the anvil has been a trusty tool for blacksmiths! An anvil is a basic blacksmithing tool.
- The Hammers | YOUR EXISTING AD GOES HERE. There are many different types, weights and shapes of hammers, claw hammers being the most popular and most widely used.
- The Tongs | Tongs are used for holding your work. A tong is a hinged piece of metal which holds hot metal and acts as a very strong, fireproof extension of the hand.
- Vice or Clamps. You will need a good vice to help you with your metal works. The post vice is the blacksmith’s vice. Look for a larger vice which can withstand repeated blows from the hammer.
