There are so many names for this one, but if you like toast and fried eggs you probably have a version of it. It makes a quick and easy breakfast that satisfies as the yolk soaks into crusty bread. Time 10m

Number Of Ingredients 7

2 slice favorite bread for toast
2 Tbsp unsalted butter, softened
1 Tbsp sugar
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
2 eggs
1 pinch kosher salt
1 pinch fresh ground pepper

Steps:

  • 1. Take bread slices and cut out hole in the center with a biscuit cutter.

BIRD NESTS

Bird Nests image

Fun Spring Treats! Kids love them. Use a 6 or 12 cup muffin tin depending on desired size of nests. We made only 6 nest with this recipe so we could overlap the top and give an "edge" for our bird to sit on. You could serve these right away or wrap them in a pretty cellophane bag and give them as a gift.

Categories     Dessert

Time 37m

Yield 6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 6

4 cups crunchy chow mein noodles
1/4 cup butter
2 cups mini marshmallows
1 (8 ounce) package candy coated chocolate eggs
6 marshmallow peeps
cooking spray

Steps:

  • Use a 6 or 12 cup muffin tin depending on desired size of nests. We made only 6 nest with this recipe so we could overlap the top and give an "edge" for our bird to sit on.
  • Heat butter and marshmallows over medium heat.
  • Stir till melted.
  • Add noodles and stir till completely coated.
  • Spray muffin tin then hands with cooking spray.
  • Place mixture into muffin cups and shape with hands to form "nests".
  • Refrigerate.
  • Approximately 30 minutes later, gently remove nests from muffin tin and perch a Peep on the side. (It helps if the nest is still a bit sticky, this will "glue" the peep on.).
  • Place nests on a tray and put back in the fridge till completely set.
  • Fill with candy eggs.

BIRDS IN A NEST

Birds in a Nest image

Provided by Rachael Ray : Food Network

Time 15m

Yield 6 servings

Number Of Ingredients 7

1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil, eyeball it
1 large clove garlic, cracked
6 big, thick slices crusty Italian semolina bread
6 extra large eggs
1 (6-ounce) jar roasted red pepper
Salt and pepper
1/2 cup grated cheese, Parmesan or Romano

Steps:

  • Place a very large nonstick skillet over low heat. Add the oil and garlic clove into the skillet and gently infuse the garlic flavor into the oil. In the meantime, using a round cookie cutter or an empty can, cut out the center of all 6 slices of bread. Add the prepared bread slices to the garlic infused oil. Crack the eggs 1 at a time and drop them into their "nests" or, the center of each slice of bread. Drain and slice red pepper. Add a strip or 2 of red pepper to each nest. Season the birds in their nests with salt and pepper and sprinkle a little cheese into each nest. Gently turn the birds in their nests and turn off the heat. Let the eggs sit in their nests 5 minutes more, then transfer to a platter and serve.

TOP 10 WAYS TO HELP NESTING BIRDS » BIRD WATCHER'S DIGEST

From birdwatchersdigest.com
Estimated Reading Time 4 mins
  • Provide water for bathing and drinking on hot days. Actually, provide water all year long, if you can—but make sure to keep it clean. Your birdbath may be the first place in your backyard a parent bird takes its offspring.
  • If you find a nest — stay away. If you happen upon a bird’s nest, don’t linger, and don’t make a return visit. We human beings leave scent trails wherever we go, and these scent trails can mean an easy meal to a hungry raccoon, opossum, fox, or other predator (We leave the same trails leading to our outdoor pet-food dishes, garbage cans, and compost piles).
  • Don’t mow meadows or brushy areas between late April and mid-August. We keep our farm fields long and grassy all summer long, mowing only a few paths that we keep short all year.
  • Continue to feed high-protein foods such as mealworms, peanuts, and suet. Don’t stop feeding your birds, unless you want to miss out on some fabulous behavior watching.
  • Put out eggshells for birds. Eggshells help female birds replace calcium lost during egg production and laying. Save your eggshells, dry them out in the oven (10-30 minutes at 250 degrees), crumble them into small pieces, and spread the pieces on an open spot on the ground.
  • Offer short clumps of pet fur in mesh bags or put in obvious places. If you looked at a hundred bird nests, chances are that most of them would have some animal hair in them.
  • Put out pieces of dry plant material, such as grass stems, twigs, and soft leaves. For birds that build woven nests (orioles, some sparrows, robins, and others), a few grass leaves can come in mighty handy during building time.
  • Hold off trimming hedges and shrubs. Lots of species use small hedges and shrubs for nesting. If you see a bird building a nest in such a place on your property, you’ve got a great excuse to avoid this bit of yard work for the next month or two.
  • Provide nest boxes. It may seem obvious, but a well-placed nest box can mean the difference between nesting success and failure for a cavity-nesting bird.
  • Keep your cat inside (and ask your neighbors to do the same). Cats take an incredible toll on songbirds, but low-nesting species and their young are especially vulnerable to cat predation.

  • The real benefits of bird’s nest. Google the benefits of drinking bird’s nest, and you’ll find 1001 different touted perks. Multiple sources will tell you different things, like how bird’s nest can improve overall immunity, or speed up the recovery process after an illness.
  • The traditional way of harvesting bird’s nest is dangerous. Source. Swiftlets build their nests are high up in coastal caves of Southeast Asia, in places such as Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand.

  • Identifying a fake. Source. The bird’s nest industry is a lucrative one. And as with every industry, there are always some unscrupulous folks out there, who will go to great lengths to cheat you of your money.
  • You aren’t actually depriving a bird of its home. Source. One of the major controversies surrounding bird’s nest is, the worry that supporting the industry deprives these little swiftlets of their homes.
  • Bottled bird’s nest aren’t the best. My mother claims her favourite grade of bird nest is “the instant kind” – the ones which come pre-bottled, and readily available at many supermarkets.
  • How to boil your own bird’s nest. Source. The best way to get 100% bird’s nest goodness is to boil your own. The process is a bit of an arduous and time-consuming one, but it’s well worth the effort.
  • You can do more than just drink bird’s nest. Source. Traditionally, bird’s nest is consumed either hot or cold as a soup. But did you know that there’s so much more you can do with your bird’s nest?
  • Bird’s nest can cost nearly $4,000. Source. One of the nicknames given to bird’s nest, especially the creamy-white nests of the highest grade, is “white gold”.

BIRD NESTING FACTS & BEHAVIORS: WHEN DO BIRDS LAY EGGS?

From nature-mentor.com
Estimated Reading Time 10 mins
  • Life Partners VS Promiscuous Birds. Some birds mate for life, while others may have multiple mates. Whether a bird mates for life or finds multiple mates will depend on the species of bird.
  • Parenting Strategy. Another thing that sometimes varies quite a bit between species is how the parents divide up the parenting duties. Some birds like Bald Eagles or Atlantic Puffins share their parenting duties equally.
  • Choosing The Nest Location. Usually female birds have the say in where the nest or burrow will be for their eggs. However some bird parents, like Bald Eagles or California Condors, look for the optimal location for their nests together.
  • Nest Building Strategy. Actually creating the nest can also be a solo or duel process depending on the bird species. This will have a significant effect on how you identify the early stages of nesting.
  • Unsuccessful Clutches. A clutch of eggs is a group of eggs produced by birds at one time that are laid in a nest. However just because you see birds mating and laying eggs, doesn’t guarantee it will be a successful clutch.
  • Nest Predators. You simply cannot study the behavior of nesting birds without also studying nest robbers. In some locations, nest predators can have a significant influence on whether or not birds are successful with nesting.
  • Nest Parasites. Some birds, rather than building their own nests are known as “nest parasites”. The brown headed cowbird is a good example of classic nest parasite behavior.
  • Temperature. Sometimes temperature swings can affect the success of a clutch. Yearly variations in temperature can affect how much work is required to maintain the correct egg temperature, causing egg laying to happen early or later.
  • Egg Health. The overall health of the eggs is another factor that significantly impacts the wellbeing of a clutch of eggs. Not all eggs are born healthy.
  • Laying Intervals. A laying interval is the length of time between when birds begin nesting and when the young are independant. It represents the window of opportunity a particular species of bird has to lay eggs during their nesting season.

  • For the taro basket, spread the julienned taro in a criss-cross pattern over a large steel mesh strainer, letting some of the taro hang over the edges. The taro will be slightly wet and starchy after it is julienned, which is exactly what you want for maximum adhesion. Take another steel mesh strainer of the same size and place it over the top so the taro strands are sandwiched between the two strainers.
  • In a wok or pot, heat 6 cups of oil to 325 degrees F (use a thermometer to check the temperature), and place the “nest,” still sandwiched between the two strainers, in the oil. Fry until golden brown, tilting the basket in different angles so the entire taro basket is fried evenly. Using a wok for frying is ideal, as you will have more room without having to use excessive amounts of oil, but a deep pot large enough for the basket will work also. Be sure to place the taro basket in the pot slowly and use the utmost caution! Using a deeper pot or wok also makes frying safer since the taro basket, when first placed into the oil, will cause the oil to expand and overflow if your pot is too small and if your oil is too close to the top of the pot.

Cut the mantle so you have flat pieces, and remove the inside skeleton. Cut the flat pieces into 2 by 3 inch rectangles, and score them diagonally in a criss-cross pattern, making sure not to cut the squid all the way through.

  • Long-Lasting Bird Nests. The grand champion nest-builder is… the bald eagle! In 1963, an eagle’s nest near St. Petersburg, Florida, was declared the largest at nearly 10 feet wide, 20 feet deep and over 4,400 pounds.
  • Small and Flexible Bird Nests. It should come as no surprise that hummingbirds, our smallest birds, make the smallest nests. Hummingbirds build on top of tree branches, using plants, soft materials and spider webs.
  • Oriole Nests. Orioles are the seamstresses of the bird world. Their iconic pendant nests dangle from outermost tree branches. The nests are impossible to miss among the barren winter branches and nearly as impossible to spot, surrounded by leaves, during the breeding season.
  • No-Fuss Nests. It’s the exception rather than the rule, but a few species of birds get away with building hardly any nest at all! This doesn’t mean they are haphazard in their approach to laying eggs, though.
  • Precarious Cliffside Nests. Huge colonies of murres and guillemots nest on rocky coastal cliffs. Most lack any structural nests, instead laying eggs that are extra pointy on one end.
  • Floating Nests. Some waterbirds, including many ducks, nest in upland grasslands far from water. Others, such as loons, grebes, coots and gallinules, nest directly on top of the water.
  • Underground Nests. Holes in trees and cacti are nest cavities; underground nests are burrows. Burrowing owls in Florida will sometimes dig their own burrow, while the burrowing owls in the west usually rely on spots excavated by prairie dogs, badgers, tortoises or other diggers.
  • Early Nesters. It is hard to say officially whoooo lays the first eggs each year, but my pick for favorite nest is the great horned owl nest. Sure, many species can begin nesting in January in southern states, but it is still winter in the northern states when great horned owls start incubating their eggs in nests made of sticks, often in trees.

BIRD NEST IDENTIFICATION - THE SPRUCE
The easiest way to identify a bird’s nest is to identify the birds that build and use it. Since those birds are typically adult birds in their breeding plumage, their field marks are useful for proper and confident identification. In many species, however, more camouflaged females do much of the nesting work and can be harder to identify.
