MEAT SAUCE FOR SPAGHETTI

- In a large skillet, cook beef and sausage over medium heat until no longer pink; drain. , Transfer to a 5-qt. slow cooker. Stir in the tomatoes, green pepper, onion, carrots, water, tomato sauce, tomato paste, brown sugar, Italian seasoning, garlic, salt and pepper. Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours or until bubbly. Serve with spaghetti. Freeze option: Do not cook spaghetti. Freeze meat sauce in freezer containers. To use, partially thaw in refrigerator overnight. Cook spaghetti according to package directions. Place sauce in a large skillet; heat through, stirring occasionally and adding a little water if necessary. Serve over spaghetti.

Steps:
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat; saute onion in hot oil until softened, about 5 minutes. Season onion with Italian seasoning; continue to saute until the herbs are fragrant, about 3 minutes more.
- Break beef into small pieces and add to the skillet; cook and stir until browned and crumbly, 5 to 7 minutes.
- Stir tomato sauce and diced tomatoes into the beef mixture; season with salt, place a lid on the skillet, reduce heat to low, and cook at a simmer for 1 hour.
- Splash wine over the mixture, stir, and simmer until thickened, about 20 minutes.

BEST HOMEMADE MEAT SAUCE
Steps:
- In a large dutch oven on the stove-top, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
- Once the oil is shimmering, add the onion and garlic, stirring constantly so as not to burn the garlic, until the onions are softened and slightly browned, for about 3-5 minutes.
- Add the sausage and ground beef, stirring and cooking until the meat is no longer pink, for about 6-8 minutes.
- Drain the pot of excess liquid.
- Add the crushed tomatoes and tomato sauce.
- Pour in the tomato paste, brown sugar, salt, pepper, basil, Italian seasoning, fennel seeds, and red pepper flakes, stirring to combine.
- Turn the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 1 1/2-2 hours. The low and slow-cooking of sauce creates a deeper, richer flavor and a thicker texture.
- Skim the fat off the top of the sauce and stir occasionally during the cooking.
- Add more seasonings to taste and serve over pasta and alongside crusty bread.
- For an extra touch of richness and shine, add a pat of butter to each bowl before serving.

When I found my Taste of Home magazine in my mailbox, I was excited to try this slow cooker recipe for "Stamp of Approval Spaghetti Sauce" Orginally submitted by Melissa Taylor of Higley AZ. This sauce is the best stuff I have ever tasted- there is no comparison in taste between store bought and this! Everyone that I made it for, my hubby, son, sister, mom and dad loved it and I (shamefully) ate 2 bowls full of plain sauce before serving! Just try it. Notice- It makes a BIG crock pot full of sauce!
