MY FASCIA BOARDS ARE ROTTED! WHAT DO I DO? - THE HONEST CARPENTER
From thehonestcarpenter.com
- Determine That You Actually Have Rot. Rot and simple discoloration are two different things. In some cases, spillover from the roof or a gutter just gunks up a fascia board.
- Identify The Water Source. In order to carry out an effective fascia repair, you first identify why your fascia got wet. When you have, make repairs to prevent water from soaking this area in the future.
- Remove The Rotted Fascia Board. To start this project, use a utility knife to cut all seams and caulk lines around the pieces that you want to replace.
- Examine The Sub-fascia. If the sub-fascia is rotted. When you finally manage to pull your fascia board loose, take a moment to examine the framing lumber that you’ve exposed.
- Measure For Your New Piece. The easiest way to do this is to simply measure the piece that you tore off. If the old piece fit very well, use it as a pattern for the new board.
- Cut The New Fascia Board. The most important thing to note here is that you should always replace fascia boards with PVC materials. These plastic-vinyl boards are impervious to rot.
- Attach The New Board. I like to take the board up for a quick test fit before I attach it. But first, I’ll half-drive one nail into the board—a little carpenter’s trick that might help later.

- Inspect Existing Fascia Board. Before tearing anything off, get a good look at your fascia to identify the problem areas. You can cut material costs and installation time if you only need to replace a small section as opposed to the entire board.
- Uninstall Gutters and Drip Edge. Unscrew your gutters, gutter brackets, and drip edge as they rest on the fascia. If they're in good condition, you can reuse these components as opposed to buying new gutters.
- Cut the Fascia into Smaller Pieces (Optional) This optional step allows you to remove fascia in a more controlled, piece-by-piece manner.
- Remove the Old Fascia. First, cut away the caulking at the fascia seams with a utility knife to disconnect the board from adjacent components.
- Examine and Prepare the Sub-fascia and Rafters. It isn't unheard of for fascia board decay to spread to the framing. With the sub-fascia freshly exposed, you can visually confirm whether or not this is the case.
- Pull out Nails. Remove any remaining nails poking out of the framing so the new fascia board can sit flush against the sub-fascia. Hammer in or cut away any nails you can't pull out of the sub-fascia with a metal-cutting-blade-equipped oscillating tool.
- Measure and Mark Your New Fascia. Determine the length of your new fascia by measuring the old board or the gap in your fascia. Once you know the correct length, mark it on your fascia board so you know where to cut.
- Cut Your Fascia. Set up your sawhorse, secure your material down with clamps, power up your circular saw, throw on your safety gear, and get to cutting to the proper measurement.
- Hammer in a Starter Nail (Optional) With your cutting complete, drive a nail halfway through the board. This step saves you the trouble of lining up the nail perfectly while trying to hold the unfastened board in place.
- Test the Board. Hold the board up to make sure it sits neatly atop the sub-fascia. For longer stretches of board, recruit your partner to help you keep it straight.
