4 DIFFERENT CONTAINERS FOR YOUR SOURDOUGH STARTER

  • Glass Jar. This is my personal favorite. Over the years I’ve moved away from plastic containers and Tupperware out of choice. I like glass. It’s easy to clean and you don’t have to worry about any weird chemicals leaching into your starter.
  • Plastic Container. Although my preference is glass, I first started with a plastic container. I had no problems with it at all. From memory, I think it was a small, random BPA-free Tupperware container I unearthed from the depths of my kitchen cabinet.
  • Pint Jar. When all of my glass jars are dirty or being used for something else, I use a pint glass! Yes, the kind you drink beer from at a bar. These are perfect for sourdough starters.
  • Stoneware Crock. Personally, I’ve never used this. King Arthur Flour offers large sourdough crocks which seem pretty popular. The selling point is that its material is non-reactive and the crock itself is easy to identify, so you won’t accidentally throw it out because it looks like pancake batter in a jar (see option #3).

  • Weck Jars 745 – 2 Sourdough Jars with Glass Lids. I will admit first that I love the way these weck jars with their easy-to-handle glass lids look. They’re just gorgeous.
  • Cambro 6 Qt Round Container with Translucent Lid. Now it’s time to see which are some of the best containers for sourdough starter if you’re looking for plastic containers.
  • Bormioli Rocco Fido 33.75 oz Jar. Another great option as a fantastic container for sourdough starter is this square jar from Bormioli Rocco. I love the way it looks and the blue lid is just gorgeous.
  • DuraHome Food Storage Containers with Lids. To balance the reviews once again, we should review another plastic model as one of the best containers for sourdough starter because we already saw 2 of the best jars for levain.
  • Mason Jars Wide Mouth 32 oz. Can you really make recommendations for the best containers for sourdough starter without mentioning mason jars? Not really.
