THE 20 GREATEST BEETHOVEN WORKS OF ALL TIME - CLASSIC FM

- Archduke Trio. This was the last piece Beethoven performed in public, due to the worsening of his deafness. Dedicated to his greatest patron, the trio has a joyous first movement, but the slow movement is one of his loveliest.
- Waldstein Piano Sonata. The Waldstein Piano Sonata was dedicated to Beethoven’s patron in Bonn, back in his teenage years. Once again there’s a joyous first movement, with rapidly repeated chords at the opening – a challenge for the pianist.
- Triple Concerto. This is my candidate for one of the two most unjustly neglected compositions by Beethoven. He wrote it for friends, so the piano part – to be played by Archduke Rudolf – is not complex.
- Choral Fantasia. Like the Triple Concerto – unjustly neglected. It begins with solo piano, then orchestra comes in, then chorus and soloists. At the first performance, Beethoven was improvising, and the piece went off the rails.
- Kreutzer Violin Sonata. An exposed opening for solo violin, double-stopping across all four strings. The longest, and most complex, of Beethoven’s 10 violin sonatas, regarded as the pinnacle of violin sonatas.

- Variations & Fugue on an Original Theme ‘Eroica’, Op. 35 (1802) These amazing variations, written when Beethoven was 32, are on a theme that fascinated him for many years and recurs in the Eroica Symphony (see below).
- Symphony No. 3 ‘Eroica’, Op. 55 (1804) Two years later, Beethoven made his single most stunning advance with his Third Symphony. Not only is it the longest symphony written up to that time, it also has, in a vague way, a subject matter, as indicated by its title.
- String Quartet in F, Op. 59 No. 1 ‘Razumovsky’ (1806) Beethoven perhaps kept his deepest feelings for string quartets, of which he wrote three sets: early, middle and late, and a couple of isolated ones.
- Violin Concerto in D, Op. 61 (1806) Beethoven’s genius was not primarily for melody; he was much more interested in development and transformation. His Violin Concerto is an exception.
- Symphony No. 5, Op. 67 (1804-8) If this symphony had a nickname, surely it would be ‘The Unavoidable’. One almost comes to dread those four notes which begin the work and never leave it alone.

- Piano Concerto No. 2 in B flat major. In 1795 young Beethoven had moved from his home town of Bonn to Europe's centre of music, Vienna. He had spent his first few Viennese years studying music with teacher Joseph Haydn and playing to nobility in private salons.
- Piano Sonata No. 14, ‘Moonlight’ In all his piano sonatas, Beethoven pushed the limits of the rapidly evolving fortepiano. He also took a lot of Classical conventions (like the fast–slow–fast movement structure) and threw them out of a moonlit window.
- Symphony No. 3 in E flat. Most symphonies in 1803 lasted around 25 minutes. Beethoven blew them out of the water with his epic Symphony No. 3, known as the 'Eroica'.
- Symphony No. 5 in C minor. Four dark, fist-shaking notes begin this symphony. They're probably the four most famous notes in all of music, that now are deeply embedded in our culture and consciousness.
- Violin Concerto in D. Dum, dum, dum, dum. No it's not Beethoven's fifth again, but rather the taps on the timpani for another musical upheaval. This time the motif is owned by his only violin concerto.
