This hearty waffle recipe comes from an issue of Parent's Magazine. Ive made it every week for years and it comes out great every time. I double it and freeze the leftover waffles and reheat in toaster oven.

2 eggs
1 2/3 cups milk (I particularly like canned evaporated milk for some of it)
1/3 cup vegetable oil
2 cups all-purpose flour (you can substitute wheat germ for 1/4 cup of white flour)
1 tablespoon baking powder
2 tablespoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon maple extract (optional)

Steps:

  • Mix all dry ingredients together using a large whisk.
  • Mix the wet ingredients together.
  • Gently combine but don't overmix.
  • Cook as your waffle maker directs.
  • Sprinkle with powdered sugar (my daughter).
  • Cover with toasted nuts, bananas, and real maple syrup (Me!).
  • Pour on log Cabin (my son) and Michele's Maple Cream Syrup for my husband!

150 g self-raising flour
1 teaspoon baking powder

1 large free-range egg
240 ml semi-skimmed milk
1 orange, optional

Steps:

  • Mix all the dry ingredients together in a large bowl. Gradually beat in the egg, then add the milk slowly, whisking well to get as smooth a batter as possible.
  • If you're making sweet waffles, grate in the orange zest and add a few drops of vanilla extract.
  • Get your waffle machine ready. Once it's hot, ladle in the batter mixture and seal, following the machine instructions until your waffles are cooked.
  • Serve with whatever takes your fancy! Let the kids invent their own, or see some of our favourite ideas below for inspiration.

Pour over the dry ingredients and very gently stir until halfway combined. Pour in the melted butter and continue mixing very gently until combined.In a separate bowl (or using a mixer), beat the egg whites with a whisk until stiff. 1 large egg
3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
Melted butter (optional for serving)

Steps:

4 large eggs, separated
300g plain flour
½ tsp bicarbonate of soda
2 tbsp golden caster sugar
50g butter, melted
600ml semi-skimmed milk

Steps:

  • Heat the waffle maker according to manufacturer's instructions. Whisk the egg whites to stiff peaks. In a separate large bowl, mix together the flour, bicarbonate, caster sugar and a pinch of salt.
  • Make a well in the centre and add the egg yolks and melted butter. Start mixing with a balloon whisk; keep whisking as you slowly add the milk until you get a smooth, thick batter. Carefully fold in the egg whites with a metal spoon.
  • Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Use a ladle to pour the batter into your waffle maker and cook for 5 mins or according to the manufacturer's instructions. Repeat until all the batter has been used up, placing your finished waffles onto a baking tray as you go.
  • Once all the waffles are made, transfer to the oven for 5 mins to warm through and crisp. Serve with sweet or savoury toppings.

1 cup (250 milliliters) milk
Sea salt
2 cups (270 grams) all-purpose flour
4 tablespoons (60 grams) unsalted butter, melted and cooled
