5 medium tart apples, cubed
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
6 tablespoons butter, melted
6 cups cubed day-old cinnamon-raisin bread (about 10 slices)
Sweetened whipped cream, optional

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, toss apples with lemon juice. In a small bowl, mix brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg; add to apple mixture and toss to coat. In a large bowl, drizzle butter over bread cubes; toss to coat., Place 2 cups bread cubes in a greased 3- or 4-qt. slow cooker. Layer with half of the apple mixture and 2 cups bread cubes. Repeat layers. Cook, covered, on low 2-3 hours or until apples are tender. Stir before serving. If desired, top with whipped cream.

1 1/2 to 2 sticks salted butter, cut into pieces, plus more for greasing
8 slices hearty wheat bread, diced
3 apples, preferably Granny Smith, peeled, cored and diced
1 1/2 packed cups brown sugar, plus more if needed

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Generously butter a 9-by-13-inch rectangular baking dish.
  • Place half the diced bread in the baking dish, and then sprinkle on half the diced apples, half the brown sugar and half the butter. Repeat with another layer of bread, apples, brown sugar and butter. End by sprinkling 1/2 cup water all over the surface, a spoonful at a time.
  • Bake, covered in foil, until the apples are tender, about 45 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 to 15 minutes to brown.

3 tablespoons cornstarch
1 cup granulated sugar
1 to 2 tablespoons butter (cut into small pieces)

Steps:

  • Peel the apples; core and slice them into thin wedges.
  • Place apple slices in the slow cooker. Add the cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), cornstarch, and sugar and stir to blend. Dot with the pieces of butter.
  • Cover and cook on low for about 6 hours, or until apples are tender but not mushy. Stir about halfway through cooking.

5 lb Gala apples
1 cup packed light brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cinnamon stick

Steps:

  • Peel, core and slice apples. In food processor, grate apples (in batches, if needed). Place in slow cooker. Stir in brown sugar, salt and cinnamon stick.
  • Cover; cook on High heat setting 4 hours.
  • Remove and reserve cinnamon stick. In food processor, puree apple mixture (in batches, if needed) until smooth. Return to slow cooker with cinnamon stick.
  • Cook uncovered on High heat setting 4 hours longer, stirring occasionally.
  • Remove and discard cinnamon stick. Cool completely. Transfer butter to jars; seal tightly. Store in refrigerator up to 3 weeks.

1 loaf of white bread, cubed, crust removed and discarded
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp salt
1 c brown sugar, packed
1 stick butter or margarine

Steps:

  • 1. Wash apples, peel, core, cut into eighths; place in bottom of crock.
  • 2. In a saucepan, melt the butter and stir in the brown sugar and spices.

2 cups blackberries
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
Finely grated zest and juice of 1/2 lemon
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 cup crushed sugar cones (about 6 cones)
1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
1/2 cup chopped almonds
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream, for topping (optional)

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Butter a 1 1/2-quart baking dish. Toss the apples, blackberries, granulated sugar, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, the lemon zest and juice, flour and 4 tablespoons melted butter in a large bowl.
  • In another bowl, combine the cones, brown sugar, the remaining 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon and 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, the almonds, salt and the remaining 4 tablespoons melted butter.
  • Pour half of the apple-berry mixture into the prepared baking dish. Scatter half of the cone mixture on top.   • Heat oven to 350°F. Lightly spray 2-quart casserole with cooking spray.

2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 1/4 cups flour
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 lb butter
2/3 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup hot water
1/2 lemon, juice of

Steps:

  • Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Arrange slices in the bottom of a lightly greased 12x9 pan.
  • Sprinkle with cinnamon.
  • Mix flour and brown sugar.
  • Cut in butter until crumbly and set aside.
  • Syrup: Combine ingredients and stir well.
  • Drizzle half of mixture over apples.
  • Cover with flour mix.
