Many recipes have been posted for the Amish bread, but none have included the starter, so I thought I'd send this along. Happy baking! Amish Friendship Bread and Starter

3 cups sugar, divided
3 cups milk, divided
3 cups flour, divided
1 cup oil
1/2 cup milk
3 whole eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups flour
1 cup sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 (5 1/8 ounce) box instant vanilla pudding
1 cup chopped nuts
1 tablespoon cinnamon, combined with
1/2 cup sugar

Steps:

  • Place ONE cup each sugar, milk, and flour in large glass or plastic bowl.
  • Cover lightly with plastic wrap and set on your counter at room temperature. Stir with a wooden spoon everyday for 17 days.
  • On day 18 do nothing.
  • On days 19, 20, and 21, stir.
  • On day 22, add 1 cup sugar, 1 cup milk, and 1 cup flour, and stir again.
  • On days 23, 24, 25, and 26 stir.
  • On day 27, add 1 cup milk, 1 cup flour, and 1 cup sugar and stir.
  • It's now ready to use to make the bread.
  • Give away two cups of the starter to two friends, use one to make the bread, and keep one to keep the starter going. When you give away a cup of the starter, give these directions for keeping it going: Do not refrigerate; Do not use metal spoon or metal bowl; Do not cover tightly, cover loosely with plastic wrap.
  • AMISH FRIENDSHIP BREAD: Mix oil, eggs, and vanilla with the starter mix.
  • In a separate bowl, mix flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, salt, baking soda, vanilla pudding mix, and nuts.
  • Add to liquid mixture and stir thoroughly.
  • Pour into two large well-greased 9x5 inch loaf pans, or one Bundt pan, that have been sprinkled with a mixture of cinnamon, sugar, and flour.
  • Sprinkle more cinnamon and sugar on the tops of the unbaked loaves (or cake). Bake at 325F for one hour or until done.

I love this bread and I had a craving for it, but didn't want to wait the month it took for the starter to be ready, so, I modified it a bit. It might not be quite as tasty as the original, but it's great if you want it in a hurry! I like to use butterscotch pudding for a different, but really nice flavor! Hope you enjoy!

3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup milk
3/4 cup flour
1 cup oil
1/2 cup milk
3 whole eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups flour

1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 (5 1/8 ounce) box instant vanilla pudding (or flavor of your choice)
1 cup chopped nuts (optional)

Steps:

  • Mix "starter" ingredients together.
  • Mix oil, milk, eggs, and vanilla with the "starter".
  • In a separate bowl, mix flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, salt, baking soda, vanilla pudding mix, and nuts.
  • Add to liquid mixture and stir thoroughly.
  • Pour into two large well-greased 9x5 inch loaf pans, one Bundt pan, or 48 muffin tins.
  • Bake at 325F for one hour or until done (muffins will take only 30-35 minutes) and enjoy!

This easy Amish Friendship Bread recipe doesn't need a starter! So quick and delicious!

4 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 cup butter (softened)
2⅔ cup sugar (divided)
2 eggs
2 cups buttermilk
2 teaspoons cinnamon

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F and grease two loaf pans with nonstick cooking spray.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour and baking soda. Set aside.
  • In a large bowl, beat together the butter, eggs, and 2 cups of sugar until creamy.
  • Add the buttermilk and dry ingredient mixture. Fold in until combined.
  • In a small bowl, combine the remaining ⅔ cup sugar with the cinnamon. Stir to mix.
  • Spread ¼ of the batter in the bottom of each loaf pan. Sprinkle ¼ of the sugar mixture over the top of the batter in each pan. Spread the remaining batter over the top of the sugar mixture in each pan and top with remaining sugar.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 45 to 50 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Allow the bread to cool in the pan until cool enough to touch, then transfer the loaf to a wire cooling rack to cool completely before slicing.

1 cup vegetable oil
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup buttermilk
½ teaspoon vanilla extract
For the Topping: ¼ cup granulated sugar + 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 325°F. Grease two 8½ x 4½-inch loaf pans; set aside.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, dry pudding mix, cinnamon, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs, oil, sugar, buttermilk and vanilla extract.
  • Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients; mix just until combined (do not over-mix).
  • Divide the mixture evenly between the two prepared loaf pans.
  • In a small bowl, combine the sugar and cinnamon topping. Sprinkle over the two loaves.
  • Bake at 325°F for 1 hour, or until a toothpick inserted in the center of a loaf comes out clean.
  • Cool in the pan for about 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely before slicing and serving.

Lightly sweet and studded with cinnamon sugar, this quick bread is much faster and easier to make than traditional Amish friendship bread.

1 cup unsalted butter
½ cup tablespoons granulated sugar
½ cups brown sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoons vanilla
½ cup yogurt
½ cup whole milk
1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
½ cup whole wheat flour
1 ½ teaspoons cinnamon
1 teaspoons baking soda

Steps:

  • Gather the ingredients.
  • Position a rack in the center of the oven and heat to 350 F. Spray an 8 1/2 x 4 1/2-inch loaf pan with cooking spray.
  • In a large bowl, cream the butter, 1/2 cup granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes if using a handheld mixer, 8 to 10 minutes if mixing by hand.
  • Add the egg and vanilla and mix until fully incorporated, about 30 seconds.
  • Add the yogurt and milk. Mix until fully incorporated.
  • Sift in the flours , 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon, and baking soda, and mix until just incorporated.
  • Spread half the batter into the prepared pan.
  • Mix 2 tablespoons sugar and 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon in a small bowl. Sprinkle on top of the batter in the loaf pan.
  • Top with remaining batter and sprinkle with sugar, if desired.
  • Bake until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean, about 45 to 55 minutes.
  • Allow the bread to cool for a few minutes, then remove from the pan and place on a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Slice and serve with butter.

1 box instant vanilla pudding
1 cup chopped pecans
1 cup raisins
1/2 cup sugar

Steps:

  • Preheat your oven to 325° F.
  • In a large bowl add 1 cup of starter, eggs, oil, white sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, baking powder, baking soda, salt, all-purpose flour, vanilla instant pudding, nuts, and raisins and combine with a wooden spoon.
  • Grease two large loaf pans. In a small bowl combine 1/2 cup sugar and 2 teaspoons cinnamon. Sprinkle half of the cinnamon-sugar mixture in the pans then divide the sweet bread between them. Sprinkle with the remaining cinnamon sugar.
  • Bake 1 hour or until bread loosens from the sides of the pan and a toothpick inserted comes out clean.

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
