Time P10DT1h

Yield 1 loaf, 4-6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 12

1 (2 1/2 ounce) package active dry yeast
2 1/2 cups warm water
2 cups flour
1 tablespoon sugar
1 cup oil
1 cup sugar
2 cups flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
3 eggs
1 (6 ounce) box vanilla pudding mix or 2 (3 ounce) boxes vanilla pudding mix
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt

Steps:

  • Starter:.
  • Dissolve yeast in 1 cup of the warm water. Stir in remaining warm water, flour and sugar, beat until smooth. Place in a glass bowl on the countertop and do not refrigerate. Cover with plastic wrap.
  • After the starter has fermented for 10 days, you're ready to begin the next 10 days.
  • Make sure you don't miss a day! Mixture might become bubbly, and that's okay.
  • Day 1: Begin or receive starter.
  • Day 2: Stir.
  • Day 3: Stir.
  • Day 4: Stir.
  • Day 5: Add 1 cup sugar, 1 cup flour, 1 cup milk.
  • Day 6: Stir.
  • Day 7: Stir.
  • Day 8: Do nothing.
  • Day 9: Do nothing.
  • Day 10: Add 1 cup sugar, 1 cup flour, 1 cup milk.
  • Bread:.
  • After all 10 days are completed, put 1 cup of the starter in four separate containers.
  • Give three to your friends and keep one for yourself to bake with later. You can give the starters in Ziplock bags, but make sure your friends "burp" the bag each day to keep excess air out.
  • When you give the starter to them, they're ready to begin the Day 1 instructions immediately.
  • Next, when you're ready to bake the bread, add the Bread ingredients to 1 cup of the starter.
  • Add and beat the bread ingredients by hand until well blended. If desired, add one cup raisins, nuts or chocolate chips.
  • Grease two loaf pans and sprinkle with sugar. Bake at 325 degrees for one hour or until a toothpick in the center comes out clean.
  • Variations:.
  • If you'd like to try a different recipe, replace the cinnamon and vanilla pudding with one of the following: poppy seeds and lemon pudding, chocolate pudding and mini chocolate chips or banana pudding and chopped walnuts.
  • Enjoy!
  • Johnski.

AMISH FRIENDSHIP GINGERBREAD

Amish Friendship Gingerbread image

A little less sweet--a little more spicy! My Christmas use for Amish Friendship Bread starter! You can add a quarter to half cup of sugar with the dry ingredients if you have a sweet tooth, but I really prefer it with just the molasses.

Categories     Quick Breads

Time 21m

Yield 1 loaf, 6-8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 18

1/2 cup amish starter
1 egg
1/4 cup oil
1/4 cup applesauce (I use natural unsweetened)
1/4 cup milk or 1/4 cup cream
1/4 teaspoon vanilla
3 tablespoons molasses
1 cup flour
3/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ginger
1/4 teaspoon clove
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1 (4 ounce) box instant butterscotch pudding mix
1/4-1/2 cup candied orange peel (optional)
1/4 cup fairly thin cream cheese frosting

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
  • Combine wet ingredients: starter, egg, oil, applesauce, milk or cream, vanilla, and molasses. Stir well.
  • Combine dry ingredients: flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, spices, and pudding mix in a separate bowl. Whisk until well-combined.
  • Add dry mix gradually to wet mix, and stir until barely combined. Stir in candied peel if using.
  • Spread in greased loaf pan.
  • Bake (at 325 degrees) approximately one hour. Check it at fifty minutes to determine baking time for your oven!
  • Remove from oven and cool on a rack. When BARELY warm to the touch, spread cream cheese frosting over top of loaf. I like runny, glazey, drippy frosting--if you like it thicker, you'll need more frosting and a light hand to keep from tearing pieces off the top of this tender loaf!

QUICK AMISH FRIENDSHIP BREAD OR MUFFINS (NO STARTER REQUIRED)

Quick Amish Friendship Bread or Muffins (No Starter Required) image

I love this bread and I had a craving for it, but didn't want to wait the month it took for the starter to be ready, so, I modified it a bit. It might not be quite as tasty as the original, but it's great if you want it in a hurry! I like to use butterscotch pudding for a different, but really nice flavor! Hope you enjoy!
