  • Begin With Your Foundation Chain. You need to have something to work your double crochet stitches into (unless you choose a chainless foundation double crochet, which will be discussed later in this article).
  • Yarn Over and Insert Hook Into Chain. Yarn over the hook and then insert the hook into the chain. On this first stitch, you are going to insert the hook into the third chain from your hook.
  • Yarn Over Again and Pull Through. Yarn over again and then pull the yarn through that third chain from the hook where you inserted your hook. When you have completed this step, you should see three loops on your crochet hook.
  • Yarn Over and Pull Through 2 Loops on Hook. Yarn over again. Pull the yarn through the first two of the three loops on your hook. This will leave two loops on the hook at the end of this step.
  • Yarn Over and Complete the Stitch. Yarn over one final time. Pull through both of the loops that are still on the hook. You have completed the double crochet stitch.
  • Completing the Row of Double Crochet Stitches. You only need to skip those first three chains at the very beginning of the foundation row. After that, you don't need to skip chains.
  • Turning Chain of 3. As explained in step six, you don't need to skip any chains except at the very beginning of the foundation chain, to make that first double crochet of the project.
  • Working Into Front and Back Loops Only (Optional) The steps above outline how to crochet rows of double crochet stitches. However, there are many things you can adjust to create slightly different designs using the double crochet stitch.
  • Increasing and Decreasing (Optional) If you want to crochet items that aren't just square or rectangular then you are probably going to need to increase and decrease your stitches.
  • Chainless Foundation for Double Crochet (Optional) As alluded to in the first step of this guide, there is actually a way to begin your crochet work without actually making a foundation chain.

  • Choosing Yarn and a Crochet Hook. The half double crochet stitch shows up in all different types of projects, so you can use any yarn and any crochet hook to work on HDC.
  • Crochet a Foundation Chain. All crochet projects begin with a slip knot. Next, make a foundation chain to work the first row into. You can crochet a foundation chain, also known as a starting chain, of any length.
  • Start in the Correct Chain. To work the first half double crochet into the foundation chain you will crochet into the chain that is three chains away from your hook.
  • Yarn Over and Insert the Crochet Hook. It's time to make the first HDC. Yarn over and insert the crochet hook into the stitch. Tip: Note that if you were making a double crochet stitch, you would also do this step.
  • Yarn Over and Pull Through the Stitch. Yarn over again and pull the yarn through the stitch. You should now have three loops on the hook.
  • Yarn Over and Pull Through the Loops. Yarn over one more time and pull the yarn through all three loops. That completes the first half double crochet stitch.
  • Complete The Row. Repeat the steps for each HDC, working across the row of foundation chain and across all the stitches of each subsequent row. Half Double Crochet Summary
  • Increasing and Decreasing in Half Double Crochet. With the basic half double crochet stitch, you can crochet any HDC pattern that's worked in consistent rows.
  • Different Ways to Work With Half Double Crochet. More Half Double Crochet Information. Half double crochet is a US crochet term; it's called half treble crochet in UK crochet patterns.
