Steps:
- Peel the onion and cut off the top, leaving the root intact. Place top of the onion down on a cutting board. Starting 1/2-inch from the root, cut the onion into quarters slicing down toward the cutting board. Then cut each quarter into 3 equal pieces for a total of 12 sections. (see note)
- In a medium bowl, stir together flour, paprika, garlic salt, thyme, and oregano. Place the onion into the flour. Use a spoon to make sure to distribute flour mixture and make sure all petals are coated. Shake off any excess flour.
- In a medium mixing bowl, whisk milk and eggs together. Coat entire onion in egg mixture. The mixture will be sticky. Then place the onion back into the flour mixture and spoon it all over the onion until coated.
- Place a piece of oil into the bottom of your basket of your air fryer. Set the breaded onion on top of the foil and then spray the onion with olive oil spray. This will give the onion a deep-fried texture. Loosely place another piece of foil over the onion to help prevent the tips from burning.
- Cook at 340 degrees F for 10 minutes. Spray the onion with more olive oil spray. Cook at 360 degrees F for 10-12 minutes. Remove the foil over the onion and cook for another 3-5 minutes depending on how browned you like it.
- While the onion is cooking, make the blossom sauce. Add the mayo, sour cream, ketchup, creamy horseradish, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, and cayenne to a small bowl and whisk to combine.
- Once the onion is done cooking, transfer it to a large, shallow bowl. Carefully take out the middle of the onion (keep this for snacking!) and place the ramekin of sauce in the center. Serve immediately.

BLOOMING ONION
If you love Outback Steakhouse's Bloomin' Onion® or Lone Star Steakhouse's Texas Rose, you'll love this recipe for a Blooming Onion made in your air fryer! The only trick is how to cut it, but I've got you covered with photos below.

Steps:
- Cut off the top ½-inch of the onion, leaving the root end of the onion intact. Place the now flat, stem end of the onion down on a cutting board with the root end facing up. Make 16 slices around the onion, starting with your knife tip ½-inch away from the root so that you never slice through the root. Begin by making slices at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o'clock around the onion. Then make three slices down the onion in between each of the original four slices. Turn onion over, gently separate the onion petals, and remove the loose pieces of onion in the center.
- Combine the eggs and milk in a bowl. In a second bowl, combine the flour, salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, paprika, and garlic powder.
- Pre-heat the air fryer to 350ºF.
- Place the onion cut side up into a third empty bowl. Sprinkle the flour mixture all over the onion to cover it and get in between the onion petals. Turn the onion over to carefully shake off the excess flour and then transfer the onion to the empty flour bowl, again cut side up.
- Pour the egg mixture all over the onion to cover all the flour. Let it soak for a minute in the mixture. Carefully remove the onion, tipping it upside down to drain off any excess egg, and transfer it to the empty egg bowl, again cut side up.
- Finally, sprinkle the flour mixture over the onion a second time, making sure the onion is well coated and all the petals have the seasoned flour mixture on them. Carefully turn the onion over, shake off any excess flour and transfer it to a plate or baking sheet. Spray the onion generously with vegetable oil.
- Transfer the onion, cut side up to the air fryer basket and air-fry for 25 minutes. The onion petals will open more fully as it cooks, so spray with more vegetable oil at least twice during the cooking time.
- While the onion is cooking, make the dipping sauce by combining all the dip ingredients and mixing well. Serve the Blooming Onion as soon as it comes out of the air fryer with dipping sauce on the side.

AIR FRYER BLOOMIN' ONION
Blooming onions are the ultimate appetizer. From their pretty presentation to their restaurant-quality flavor, this crispy, sliced dish is addicting, especially when dunked in just the right sauce. If you'll looking for something to pull apart that's not totally fried, just grab your air fryer. It's a cinch to make if you've got the expert tips, and our Test Kitchen is here to dish.To create a crunchy, breaded texture and a fully cooked onion that holds its signature shape, be sure to start with a large onion. If you have the time, soak your onion in cold water overnight to allow it mellow a bit and "bloom" better. Use deep, small bowls for dunking so you don't have to handle the onion as much, which can mess up the petals. After the first dunk, let the onion sit for 5 minutes and double dunk. The first dunk will give the second round of batter a good hold so it sticks and coats better. Serve it immediately (it doesn't sit well!) with some cold beers and dipping sauce, and it will be devoured in no time.

Steps:
- Prepare the Onion: Cut about 1/4-inch from top of onion; cut root end of onion so that it stands up on a flat surface. Remove and discard peel. Starting at top of onion, cut vertical slices at 1/2-inch intervals to within 1/4-inch of bottom of onion. Place onion in a bowl with cold water to cover, and chill at least 2 hours or up to 24 hours.
- Meanwhile, whisk together eggs, milk, and 1/2 teaspoon of the salt in a medium-size deep bowl. Whisk together flour, paprika, garlic powder, mustard, cayenne, cumin, black pepper, and 1/2 teaspoon of the salt in a separate medium-size deep bowl. Cover and chill egg mixture until ready to use.
- Drain onion, and pat dry. Sprinkle onion with remaining 1/2 teaspoon of the salt, and wrap tightly in aluminum foil. Preheat a 6.3-quart air fryer to 350°F for 10 minutes. Place wrapped onion in air fryer basket, and cook 10 minutes. Remove from cooker, unwrap and remove foil from top and sides of onion. Let onion stand until cool enough to handle. Remove from foil, and carefully fan out petals of onion.
- Dip entire onion in egg mixture, allowing excess to drip off. Dip onion in flour mixture, making sure all petals are evenly coated. Tap off excess. Allow onion to stand 5 minutes. Dip onion again in egg mixture, allowing excess to drip off; dip again in flour mixture again, tapping off excess. Place onion in air fryer basket, and liberally coat with cooking spray. Cook at 350°F until crispy and golden brown, about 25 minutes.
- Prepare the Sauce: Stir together all ingredients. Serve onion immediately with sauce.

Steps:
- Cut off the tip of the onion and peel it. Flip it cut side down on a cutting board and start slicing 1/4 inch away from the root. The root should stay attached. Make as many cuts as possible, start with 4 quarter slices and then slice each quarter 3 to 4 times to get similarly sized petals. Set aside.
- In a shallow bowl, combine flour, paprika, and ½ tsp salt.
- In another shallow bowl combine buttermilk (or milk and vinegar/lemon juice) and the egg, then add ¼ cup of the flour mixture from the first bowl and whisk until smooth.
- In a third bowl combine panko breadcrumbs, remaining salt, and olive oil with a fork until the oil is evenly distributed.
- Dredge the onion in the flour mixture and make sure it is coated evenly between the petals. Sifting the flour over the onion helps. Shake off excess flour.
- Dip the onion in the buttermilk batter and use a spoon or your fingers to coat it evenly.
- Place onion in the panko mixture and use your hands or a spoon to get the mixture between the petals.
- Place onion in the Air Fryer basket, spray it with oil spray and cover the top with aluminum foil. The air should still be able to circulate around the onion.
- Cook at 375°F for 15-20 minutes then remove the foil and air fry until golden brown and crispy, about 3-7 more minutes. Carefully remove onion and serve with dipping sauce.

Steps:
- Start by cutting off 1/2 inch from the top of the onion, then peel the outer skin from the onion.
- Place the onion cut-side down. Starting about 1/2 inch from the root, make a downward cut all the way through to the board. Make sure your knife cuts into the middle of the onion. All your cuts should meet in the middle. DO NOT CUT THROUGH THE ROOT OR TOO CLOSE TO THE ROOT.
- Repeat to make four evenly spaced cuts around the onion.
- Make 1 additional cut between each section until you have 8 evenly spaced cuts.
- Turn the onion over and set aside for 5 minutes to allow the petals to relax.
- Prior to breading use your fingers to gently separate the outer pieces.
- Now that the onion is open it's time to bread it to get that crispy coating.
- If any of the "petals" are stuck together, gently separate them so the onion can be in "full bloom."
- Whisk the flour and spices in a large bowl. In a small deep bowl, whisk the egg, butter, and milk.
- Place the onion in a large clean bowl, cut-side up and separated.
- Sprinkle the flour mixture over the onion getting in between the layers. I used a fork to sprinkle the flour mixture, and used my fingers to separate each individual layer and sprinkle the flour between every petal.
- Dump the remaining flour over the whole onion. Let it sit for a few minutes.
- Turn the onion over and gently pat off the excess flour back into the bowl. Reserve the remaining flour. You want to make sure the flour coats the petals without leaving large clumps of flour in between the petals.
- Transfer the onion into a large bowl and pour the egg mixture over the onion and coat evenly. Pouring over the onion helps it to get in between the petals and coat the flour.
- Open each petal to make sure the egg mixture soaks every bit of flour between the petals. Let the onion sit in this mixture for a few minutes. Remove the onion from the bowl and let the excess drip off.
- Add the packet of seasoned coating mix to the leftover flour mixture. Place the wet onion into an empty bowl or onto the aluminum foil and sprinkle the reserved flour and coating mixture over it. Do not sprinkle in between those petals as it will be difficult to spray with cooking oil afterwards. However, sprinkle the flour and breading mixture over every part of the onion that is exposed to the air. I will even brush more egg mixture over drier parts of the onion to get as much mixture there as possible.
- Place the onion into the refrigerator to set while you preheat the air fryer.
- Preheat the air fryer to 300F.
- After ten minutes, remove the onion from the refrigerator and spray generously with cooking oil. This is important to help get that "deep fried" flavor and texture. Be sure to soak all the flour mixture with cooking oil that you can see. You can also check in between the petals and spray any other flour spots you see.
- Place on a piece of foil for easy removal after cooking.
- Air fry 20 minutes or until crispy and golden brown. Open and spray at least once with more cooking oil during the cooking process.
- Remove gently and serve with Blooming Onion Dipping Sauce.

Steps:
- Cut off the top portion of the onion and peel back the outer skin.
- Flip the onion over and trim off the roots, if needed.
- With the bottom side up, cut straight through from top to bottom working around the center of the onion. You should end with approximately 16-20 sections.
- Soak onion in ice water while you make up the mixtures.
- Mix all dry ingredients together in a medium bowl.
- In another medium bowl combine the eggs and milk until smooth. Add 1/4 cup of the flour mixture to the milk mixture and whisk until smooth.
- On a large plate, place 1 cup panko crumbs and lightly spray with oil of your choice.
- Remove onion from the ice water and let it drain for a minute.
- Coat the onion in the flour mixture making sure to get flour in between onion petals.
- Then soak the onion in the milk mixture, again opening petals to ensure milk gets the flour mixture dry.
- Then place onion back into flour bowl and pour panko crumb mixture over the top of the onion, working to get crumbs between each onion petal.
- Make a foil sling by folding some foil into a somewhat narrow strip and making two handles at the end of the foil.
- Place the onion inside the air fryer basket, on top of the foil sling and spray with oil.
- Cover with foil, securing two sides under the onion and leaving the other two sides open for air flow.
- Air Fry at 370°F/187°C for 15 minutes. Remove the foil and then cook for 3-5 minutes more, depending on the size of your onion and your air fryer wattage. The final result should be nice and toasty with just some light charring on the ends of your onion.
- Lift the foil sling handles and place onion on your serving platter and enjoy with dipping sauce.
- Mix all ingredients for the dipping sauce.
- Refrigerate until ready to enjoy.
