- Lay Out the Outlet Box. Use a stud finder to find and avoid studs in your walls. Alternatively, start at a corner or door jamb and measure 16 inches over.
- Cut in the Outlet Box. Cut out the drywall using a jab saw, staying just inside the pencil line. You can always make the hole bigger, but you can’t make it smaller.
- Pull Wire Through Outlet Box. Punch through one of the cable openings in the box with a screwdriver. Widen the hinged cable opening enough to push the cable through.
- Prep the Cable. Cut a slit lengthwise at the end of the cable, through the outer orange covering. Peel back the orange covering to expose the interior white, black, red and bare wires.
- Attach the Ground Wire. Insert the ground wire into slot labeled “ground” on the back of the receptacle. Tighten the screw with a screwdriver. Tug on the ground wire to ensure it’s secure in the receptacle.

- Go to your home's circuit panel and turn off the circuit for the room with the outlet you need to wire. If you cannot locate the circuit, turn off the main switch.
- Take the outlet cover off by removing the single screw with the screwdriver. Remove the screws that are securing the existing switch to the electrical box.
- Disconnect the wires from the screw terminals on the switch. You will have five wires that are hanging in the electrical box. Two wires are hot, two wires are for the load and the last wire is the ground.
- Attach the green wire to the ground screw on the 240-volt switch. Attach the two hot wires to the red and black screw terminals. Attach the two load wires to the blue and yellow screw terminals.
- Verify that the wires are connected to the proper screw terminals, then tighten the screws to secure the switch to the electrical box.
