BEST FOOD BLOGS TO FOLLOW IN 2016 - GREATIST

From greatist.com
Estimated Reading Time 8 mins
  • Naturally Ella. After her father had a heart attack, Erin Alderson (whose initials are ELLA) broke up with fast food and all processed meat. Her blog features seasonal vegetarian recipes that are pantry-inspired.
  • Minimalist Baker. Few things are more disappointing than finding what seems like the perfect recipe only to click and learn that it has more than 20 ingredients, several of which you’ve never heard of.
  • Food Heaven Made Easy. Food Heaven Made Easy sounds like the name of an amazingly delicious food delivery service, but don’t be fooled. The blog is actually a compilation of recipes, cooking videos, and nutrition tips.
  • 101 Cookbooks. Back in 2003, Heidi Swanson launched 101 Cookbooks with the goal of cooking through her monstrous collection of recipe books. More than 10 years later, the blog (which we want to live in, it’s so gorgeous) focuses on natural, whole foods and Heidi’s travels.
  • Green Kitchen Stories. The globe-trotting family behind Green Kitchen Stories is hardly stuck on one type of cuisine. David and Luise met while studying in Rome before moving to Stockholm to start a family.
  • My New Roots. A self-taught cook, Sarah Britton started blogging in 2007 to share her knowledge of holistic nutrition. (She attended the Institute of Holistic Nutrition in Toronto.)
  • Golubka Kitchen. Anya Kassoff was born and raised in Russia but now calls Florida home. She believes that the healthiest food is also the best-tasting food.
  • The Full Helping. In 2015, Gena Hamshaw changed the name of her blog from Choosing Raw to The Full Helping. Now she posts recipes that are less extreme, although she is still inspired by her raw food background.
  • Deliciously Ella. All kinds of mouthwatering, plant-based dishes (including chickpea, quinoa, and turmeric curry; coconut and raspberry mousse; and sage and apricot nut roast with cranberry sauce) are turned out in Ella Woodward’s sunny U.K.
  • Running on Real Food. Raw almond chocolate chip cookies, pumpkin spice latte granola, vegan tofu and cashew fried rice—workout fuel has never looked so good.

CHANGES TO THE NUTRITION FACTS LABEL - FDA

From fda.gov
  • Why did you change the Nutrition Facts label? The previous label was more than 20 years old when the changes were made. To make sure consumers have access to more recent and accurate nutrition information about the foods they are eating, FDA required changes based on updated scientific information, new nutrition and public health research, more recent dietary recommendations from expert groups, and input from the public.
  • What major changes were made? The changes include modifying the list of required nutrients that must be declared on the label, updating serving size requirements, and providing a refreshed design.
  • Is the updated label already on packaged foods? Yes, manufacturers with $10 million or more in annual food sales had to make the changes by January 1, 2020.
  • Why must “added sugars” now be included? The scientific evidence underlying the 2010, the 2015-2020, and the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans support reducing caloric intake from added sugars.
  • Must Added Sugars be declared on packages and containers of single-ingredient sugars and syrups, such as pure honey and maple syrup? Packages and containers of these products are not required to include a declaration of the number of grams of Added Sugars in a serving of the product but must still include a declaration of the percent Daily Value for Added Sugars.
  • What about certain cranberry products that have sugars added for palatability? The number of grams of Added Sugars in a serving of a cranberry product, as well as the percent Daily Value for Added Sugars, must still be labeled.
  • How does the FDA define “added sugars”? The definition of added sugars includes sugars that are either added during the processing of foods, or are packaged as such, and include sugars (free, mono- and disaccharides), sugars from syrups and honey, and sugars from concentrated fruit or vegetable juices that are in excess of what would be expected from the same volume of 100 percent fruit or vegetable juice of the same type.
  • Are you using the new label to tell people what to eat? The Nutrition Facts label is designed to provide information that can help consumers make informed choices about the food they purchase and consume.
  • Why is trans fat still on the label if the FDA is phasing it out? Trans fat will be reduced but not eliminated from foods, so FDA will continue to require it on the label.

8 MAJOR CHALLENGES FACING THE FOOD AND BEVERAGE INDUSTRY ...

From fooddive.com
  • Consumers avoiding center of store products. "Consumers have been shopping that perimeter of the store at the expense of the center of store categories, so that's obviously a challenge that's weighed on traditional packaged foods companies," said Erin Lash, equity analyst for Morningstar, Inc.
  • Healthy and clean label vs. diet-friendly. Consumers aren't as focused on foods fit for dieting in terms of cutting fat and calories as they once were.
  • Rise of natural and organic products. "If you can't beat 'em, acquire 'em" has been the motto for many major food and beverage companies this year as more manufacturers acquire smaller natural and organic companies that are slowly eating away at legacy brands’ market share.
  • Adapting to shift toward e-commerce. Industries like consumer electronics, appliances, toys and games, and other household products are already firmly established in the e-commerce space, but food and beverage manufacturers have overall been slower on the uptake.
  • The anti-sugar movement. With major organizations like the WHO and FDA coming out against high sugar intake, the latter recommending a cap of no more than 10% of daily calories, more consumers are turning away from foods that are high in sugar, particularly soda.
  • Adding value to products. Value-added foods and beverages, such as products fortified with vitamins, minerals, or protein, are becoming more popular as consumers look for more than just flavor and price when making purchasing decisions.
  • Slow product innovation cycles. Bringing to market new products that align with emerging consumer trends in a timely manner is difficult for many food and beverage companies as the process of creating new, relevant products and moving them through R&D, testing, and marketing to retail takes time — often more time than companies would like.
  • Making products more convenient. The growth of snacking among consumers has caused manufacturers to rethink the design and packaging of their products to make them more convenient and appropriate for eating on the go.
