- Ignition Coil Pack Failure. Ignition coils or coil packs are common downfalls in many Volkswagen engines. They transform the lower voltage supplied by the battery to the higher voltage the spark plugs need to create a spark in the combustion chamber.
- Clock Spring Failure – Volkswagen Tiguan. Just like on the Atlas, there has been a recall on the clock spring’s. A clockspring is mounted between the steering wheel and the column.
- Defective Timing Chain and Tensioner – Volkswagen Tiguan. Timing chain and the associated tensioners are not very reliable in many Volkswagen’s, and the Tiguan is no exception, unfortunately.
- Premature Water Pump Failure. Water pump failure is very common in Volkswagen’s and Audi’s, but the Tiguan water pump fails prematurely. A water pump recirculates coolant from the radiator to the engine and then back to the radiator.
- Defective N80 valve. There are quite a few Volkswagen vehicles that have a defective N80 valve, or often referred to as EVAP purge solenoid. An N80 valve is a component in the EVAP system that regulates the fuel vapors that go back into the intake manifold to get burned off.
- Plastic Intake Manifold Failure. This is another major issue with 2.0T’s Tiguans and Volkswagen issued a TSB to address the issue. An intake manifold ensures the air being breathed into the engine is evenly distributed in the four cylinders.
- Subframe Clunk. Now, this next issue is very peculiar and is the first time we’re hearing anything like this for any Volkswagen vehicles. Tiguan’s from 2008 – 2016 are affected with “subframe clunk”.

- Engine Stalling. For the 2016 – 2019 Tiguan models, there are large numbers of complaints from owners who have experienced engine stalling followed by the Electronic Power Control (EPC) warning light coming on.
- Hesitation When Accelerating. Another common issue for the 2016 – 2019 Tiguan models is hesitation when accelerating. Owners have described it as ‘severe’ and ‘erratic’ making it extremely dangerous to drive on the highway as they can not gauge the rate at which the car will speed up.
- Timing Chain Failure. Timing chain failure plagued Tiguan models from 2009 – 2013 and the issue was widespread across numerous VW and Audi models. The timing chain is located in the engine – it synchronizes the rotation of the crankshaft and camshaft and is made of metal links like a chain.
- Failed Clockspring. From 2011 – 2019 there are a huge number of complaints on file pertaining to Tiguan airbag and horn issues, these are mostly due to a failed clock spring.
- Burning Oil. According to Car Problem Zoo, a site that collects car owners’ feedback, a common problem with Tiguan models, mainly from 2018, is that the engine continually needs oil adding.
- Carbon Buildup. The most commonly reported complaint about the Tiguan on the car website Repair Pal, is carbon buildup, which causes decreased power and fuel economy.
- Automatic Emergency Braking Problems. There have been numerous complaints from owners who have experienced their Tiguan applying the emergency brakes without driver input.
- Infotainment System Problems. There have been a number of complaints about the 2022 VW Tiguans infotainment system, owners have reported that the system fails to start or reboots at random.
