WHISTLE DOGS

Whistle Dogs image

My version of a Canadian classic from A&W. Recipe is for one hotdog, multiply by how many you need.

Provided by Cookin-jo

Categories     Pork

Time 10m

Yield 1 1 hotdog, 1 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 hot dog bun
1 hot dog, split almost in half lengthwise (good quality please)
2 slices bacon, fried to just a bit crisp
1 slice processed cheese, halved
2 teaspoons sweet pickle relish
1 teaspoon onion, minced

Steps:

  • Fry the bacon and drain on paper towels.
  • Grill the wiener split side down for a minute or two, while toasting the bun on the high rack of the grill, open face down.
  • When they are done immediately add the cheese to the bun so the cheese melts.
  • Relish and onion the other side of the bun, add on the dog and bacon and enjoy.
  • Ketchup lovers, go right ahead.

FIVE THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT GROUNDHOGS
five-things-you-didnt-know-about-groundhogs image

From now.tufts.edu
  • Groundhogs are also known as woodchucks or “whistle-pigs.” The familiar name woodchuck actually has nothing to do with wood, and stems from the Native American names for them: wuchak, wejack, and possibly otchek, which is a name for fishers.
  • They are actually large squirrels. Capable of weighing up to 15 pounds, groundhogs.
  • Groundhogs are important intermediaries in the food chain. Primarily herbivores, groundhogs eat a variety of plants, including from people’s gardens.
  • Pregnancy goes by fast for them. Groundhog mating season is in the early spring and, after only a month-long pregnancy, mother groundhogs typically give birth to a litter of two to six blind, hairless babies.
  • Groundhogs are among the few species of true hibernators. This is the part of their behavior that has led to North American Groundhog Day tradition. After losing up to half their weight while hibernating, groundhogs usually emerge from their winter burrows in February—hence the date of this holiday.
