7 WORST INGREDIENTS FOR YOUR HAIR ... - ALLWOMENSTALK

- Sodium Laurel Sulfate. You’ve probably heard of this one before as one of the 7 worst ingredients for your hair. Also known as SLS, it’s what gives your shampoo that foamy lather, and your eyes that tearful burning sensation.
- Sodium Laureate Sulfate. SLES is kinda like the little brother to SLS. Still part of the same carcinogenic nitrate family, but with a twist... SLES likes the drink.
- Mineral Oil and Petrolatum. I’m sorry to tell you this, but your Nana has lied to you, Vaseline is NOT good for your hair. In fact it can prevent your hair from growing and cause ugly/painful acne on your scalp.
- Isopropyl Alcohol. We all know alcohol is delicious mixed with Coca-Cola in a glass, and that too much of it is bad for your liver and your skin, but what most people don’t know is that it’s common in your shampoo, and it’s just as bad.
- Imidazolidinyl Urea and DMDM Hydantoin. I had to literally double-check the spelling OUT LOUD to make sure this was correct. Point in case - if you can’t spell it or at least pronounce it, it’s probably bad for you.
- Fragrance. Remember when I said that your current problem in choosing a shampoo/conditioner was choosing between the scents Vivacious Vanilla and Marvelous Mango?
- Propylene Glycol. This chemical is also known as PE. Who regularly calls it PE you ask? Oh just the industry workers who use it to break down cellular structures and proteins that are the same as human skin.

- Neutrogena T-gel shampoo. Everyone has heard of Neutrogena and I have used it in the past, not least because on first looking it appears to be the only suitable product in the shops.
- Allergenics gentle medicated shampoo. After using Neutrogena I didn’t think I would like this one much as I don’t like the medicated coal tar smell of Neutrogena but this one has a very pleasant light smell.
- Suitable for those prone to dry, itchy skin conditions. Allergenics Gentle Medicated Shampoo has been formulated after extensive research and dermatological studies in the field of allergies.
- Dr Organic Aloe Vera Shampoo. This is the shampoo I’m using right now. It does have a faint perfume and looking at the ingredients below there are a few alarm bells ringing.
- Lush soak and float. Lush say that it is “A no-nonsense shampoo bar to help soothe scalps. Cade oil is derived from juniper and has long been used to treat scalps with psoriasis, dandruff and eczema.
- Barefoot SOS Shampoo. I have this shampoo at home too and do enjoy using it, though I don’t use it all the time as it’s also not cheap at about £13 for 200ml, but cheap isn’t always best.
- Nizoral dandruff shampoo. I have used this in the past, you have to massage into the scalp, leave for about 10-15 minutes and then rinse off. It did help a bit but it comes in such a minute little bottle that at about £6 a bottle for just 60ml of shampoo it’s VERY expensive.
- Green people Irritated scalp shampoo. I really like the look of this one as I love their sunscreen but haven’t bought any yet. It costs about £10-11 for 200ml but this does look to be the price you pay for something with a nice ingredients list.
- Make your own shampoo with soap nuts and rhasoul. I bought my rhassoul from Natural Spa Suppliesand all you need to do is mix the clay with water, leave for 10 minutes and then add a little more water to get the consistency you prefer.
RANKED: 25 SHAMPOOS THAT ARE ACTUALLY DAMAGING OUR …
From thetalko.com
- Neutrogena, Be Gone. Which shampoo is last on our list? Neutrogena. More specifically, the Neutrogena T.Gel Shampoo because it contains highly hazardous propyl hydroxybenzoate (propylparaben),which is linked to breast cancer tumours, as Breast Cancer UK reports.
- Sunsilk Super-Shine Shampoo (More Like "Super Dry") SunSilk has been around for ages, and we've all loved how it makes hair feel so soft. But there's a drawback that makes this shampoo not worth it, even with its new pretty packaging and promise of shine.
- “L’Oreal, Because It’s Not Worth It!” Drugstore shampoos are not worth the money you save. L'Oreal Elvive shampoo has a long list of chemical ingredients, among them glycerin, which is used as antifreeze in cars, and citric acid that is a preservative but is also used in stop baths when developing photographs, as Wired reports.
- We’ll Skip On The Suave. When we think of suave, we think of a suave man, and not a shampoo brand, and we want you to think the same. You may feel suave instantly after you wash your hair because it smells like paradise, and feels easy and breezy and looks shiny, but in due time, your hair will be nothing but a haystack.
- Leave It Down Under: Aussie 3-Minute Miracle Moist. Once upon a time, we'd buy the Aussie shampoo because the purple bottle with the kangaroo on it was irresistible.
- The Bad Triple Threat Of OGX. Hair can make you or break you, and their shampoos certainly does the latter. You know what OGX contains? Salt, silicones and sulfates.
- Fruity And Unhealthy. Garnier Fructis shampoo bottles look bright and beautiful. You're probably tempted to try them out. But don't waste your time or money.
- Dove Nourishing Secrets (More Like Punishing Secrets...) Dove always make their products, like shampoo, look pure and safe with their commercials and advertisements.
- Samy Is Not So Smooth. There is nothing smooth about the Samy Smooth Shampoo ― the formula must have got lost in the creativity of the name. It is one of those shampoos that comes cheap, but you'll just damage your hair.
- The One Biosilk Shampoo That Does Not Cut It. Biosilk is at at the top when it comes to hair care. Most of their products are A-class goodies, but this shampoo failed us.
WHAT INGREDIENTS TO AVOID IN SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER …
From ladieshaircaring.com
- Sulfates. If you are having frizzy hair out of no hair, chances are…your scalp has been in contact with sulfates recently. Sulfates in shampoo are bad news not just for your scalp, but for your hair too.
- Parabens (Preservatives) Not just shampoo, manufacturers used to use this ingredient in almost all of their products including food products. In some cases, it still exists to prevent the product from going bad!
- Formaldehyde. The name alone sounds scary! This is probably because this highly criticized chemical agent has been banned from several products including shampoo and conditioner.
- Salt/Sodium Chloride. Some shampoo brands use sodium chloride in their conditioner and shampoo to make a thicker consistency. But if you have a sensitive and dry scalp with an itching problem, it’s bad news for you.
- Phthalates. It can lead to reduced sperm count in men and early puberty for girls. So, why they use phthalates in the shampoo in the first place? Well, to increase the spreadability of any hair care products, manufacturers add this; though recently they are doing it a lot less.
- Synthetic Colors. Don’t fall in love with your shampoo just because it’s pale lavender or bright pink? They are in these eye-catching colors simply because such shampoos are filled with synthetic dyes.
- Synthetic Fragrances. Like the artificial colors, many shampoos are filled with artificial fragrances as well. In fact, most of the scented cosmetic products use this.
- Propylene Glycol. If your hair care products or any cosmetics don’t get a freeze in cold or melted in the heat, there is a higher chance it contains Propylene Glycol.
- Dimethicone. Many brands use this silicon form of chemical agent for the thickness, moisturizing, and anti-frizzing properties. It creates a mask to cover the damages and make it look very shiny.
- Triclosan. For its antibacterial and antifungal properties, many manufacturers add this to their toiletries and cosmetic products. It’s already banned to be used in antibacterial soap but still allowed to be used in shampoo, toothpaste, and deodorants.
THE 20 WORST SHAMPOOS MONEY CAN BUY
From moneyinc.com
- Selsun Blue Maximum Strength with Aloe Dandruff Shampoo. As harsh as this may sound, Selsun Blue should be held legally accountable for a number of medical problems their hair care products have caused the people who made the mistake of trusting their brand enough to buy any of it.
- Alberto VO5 Moisture Milks Strawberries and Cream Moisturizing Shampoo. Normally, shampoo products shouldn’t have to come with a warning label that will cause an educated, discerning customer from buying them.
- Nexxus Ultimate Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner -Therappe and Humectress Collection. Nexxus boasts their Ultimate Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner from the Therappe and Humectress Collection locks in moisture to unleash the hair’s smoothness.
- American Crew 3-in-1 Shampoo, Conditioner, and Body Wash. The first ingredient behind water for the American Crew 3-in-1 Shampoo, Conditioner, and Body Wash product is Sodium Laureth Sulfate.
- Pantene Pro-V Daily Moisture Renewal Shampoo. Pantene gets to be named twice in the list of worst shampoos money can buy as its Pro-V Daily Moisture Renewal Shampoo does the exact opposite as the brand name suggests.
- Pantene Pro-V Nature Fusion Smooth Vitality Shampoo. There are so many harmful ingredients in every single one of Pantene’s products that makes one wonder why anybody would want to have anything to do with them.
- Suave Essentials. Suave Essentials shares the same common problem as every other major brand that convinces the public they’re buying a quality product when, in reality, they’re not.
- Aussie Total Miracle Shampoo. Is it a crime or a miracle that Aussie Total Miracle Shampoo is allowed to be sold to the public? The list of ingredients that have already been linked to allergic reactions, skin irritation, hair loss, and even cancer include Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, and Cocamidopropyl Betaine are the top ingredients listed after water.
- L’Oreal Paris Elvive Total Repair 5 Repairing Shampoo. For years L’Oreal has won over a solid fan following of their hair care products, including shampoos.
- Head & Shoulders Anti-Dandruff Shampoo. Using Head & Shoulders Anti-Dandruff Shampoo is like pouring liquid laundry detergent on your head. The detergents of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate are linked to allergic reactions and hair loss.
