- Dim Sum. A Hong Kong version of dining with small dishes, dim sum includes classics such as har gao (steamed shrimp dumplings wrapped in a thin, translucent skin), char siu bao (barbecued pork bun) and siu mai (Chinese dumpling).
- Fish Balls. A classic Hong Kong snack, these are balls of deliciousness made with fish meat, often cooked in a piping hot curry and commonly sold at street food stalls.
- Egg Waffles. Affectionately called gai daan zai (“mini chicken egg”), this is Hong Kong’s version of a waffle. A crispy exterior hides the soft, sweet sponge inside.
- Pineapple Bun. A pineapple bun (bo lo bao) is a soft sweet bun topped with a crumbly cookie style crust of sugar, eggs, flour and lard. When cooked, the crust cracks open, giving a pineapple-like appearance on top.
- Egg Tart. Two types of egg tarts have emerged since they first became popular, one with a flaky, pastry shell, the other with sweet shortbread. Whichever you pick, it encases a soft, creamy custard.

- Fishballs. Round things are fun to eat. Hong Kongers eat millions of these compressed fish-meat snacks every day. And with a stall stewing fishball skewers in almost every 7-Eleven in the city, they’re as ubiquitous and as accessible as that other classic Hong Kong snack, siu mai dumplings.
- Scrambled egg sandwich. On paper, an egg sandwich doesn’t sound noteworthy. After all, it’s just cooked egg in between two pieces of soft white bread.
- Stinky tofu. A potent pot of stinky tofu. No doubt you will have heard or read about the stench emanating from one of the strangest foods to come out of this part of the world.
- Pineapple’ bun. The boh loh baau (literally meaning “pineapple bun”) is the holy grail of what may generously be termed the Hong Kong school of baking.
- Cha siu baau. All steaming goodness and sweet pork. Barbecued pork stuffed into a bun deserves its very own shout-out here. Because, when we break open a soft white steamed bun and see the glistening mauve filling of diced cha siu with extra barbecue sauce spilling out and sniff the heady perfume of wine, soy, and hints of caramel, we’re moved.

- Beat sugar, yeast, baking powder, and 1¾ cups (250 g) Hong Kong flour or cake flour in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the dough hook on low speed to combine. Combine milk, cream, and ¼ cup water in a measuring glass or small bowl. Reduce speed to low and, with motor running, gradually pour in milk mixture and mix until dough forms a ball, about 2 minutes. If dough has not formed a ball by then, gradually add more flour a teaspoonful at a time until it does. Continue to mix until very smooth, about 8 minutes more. (Alternatively, you can mix in a medium bowl with a wooden spoon or your hands until a shaggy, loose dough forms, then turn out onto a clean surface and knead until smooth and glossy, about 10 minutes. Place in a large bowl to rise.) Remove bowl from mixer and cover with a damp kitchen towel. Let dough rest until slightly puffed, 30–60 minutes.
- Portion dough into 13 equal-size pieces (use a scale if desired). Roll each into an 8"-long rope. Tie each rope into a knot and tuck the end that came through the knot underneath the bun. Tuck the other end up and over the top. Place buns on parchment squares as you go.
- Cover buns loosely with damp kitchen towel and let rise in a warm place until slightly puffed and marshmallow-y in texture, 30–45 minutes.
