28 THINGS THAT CANNOT BE RECYCLED - ALMOST ZERO WASTE
From almostzerowaste.com
Estimated Reading Time 6 mins
- Paper plates, towels, or napkins. Such paper products can’t be recycled because: they are usually dirty with food, grease, or other liquids. Most tissue paper is made from recycled paper already, and it can’t be recycled again, as the paper’s fibers are too short, resulting in low-quality pulp in the recycling process.
- Pizza boxes. But wait, pizza boxes are made from paper, so what’s the problem? In short, the paper is often spoiled with oil, sauce, and food from the pizza.
- Shredded paper. Collecting shredding paper can be a massive pain unless you contain it in a box. Furthermore, once the paper is shredded, the fibers become shorter and less useful in recycling.
- Wet paper. The fibers of the paper are essential in recycling, as we figured already. When wet, the paper breaks down rapidly, and the fibers become shorter; this makes it harder to recycle.
- Waxed paper. Wax paper is not recyclable because it is coated with wax, and it is considered “mixed paper.”
WHAT CAN AND CAN’T YOU RECYCLE? A SIMPLE GUIDE
From wikihow.life
- Toss clean paper and cardboard in your curbside bin. Make sure paper products are dry and unsoiled. Most cardboard mailing boxes and food packages can be recycled.
- Recycle metal cans in curbside recycling. You can recycle food cans, drink cans, and metal aerosol cans. Before putting your cans out for recycling, empty all the food or liquid out of them and rinse them to remove residue.
- Put unbroken glass bottles and jars in the recycling bin. Double check that your local service takes glass. Most curbside recycling programs accept glass containers, such as drink bottles, jam jars, and milk jugs.
- Check the number on plastics to find out if they’re recyclable. All plastics are recyclable, but your facility may not accept every type. You may have noticed the numbers in the middle of the recycling symbol on many plastic containers.
- Separate out metal caps and lids. Most jar lids and caps are made of recyclable metal. However, your average mixed recycling facility might not have the proper equipment to sort them out and process them.
