1 tablespoon curry powder
2 teaspoons soy sauce
2 teaspoons chili-garlic sauce
1/2 teaspoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon Chinese five spice powder
1 teaspoon cornstarch dissolved in 2 teaspoons water
1 tablespoon cooking oil
1/2 lb ground beef
1/4 cup finely chopped onion
1 green onion, minced
pastry dough, for a 9 inch double-crust deep-dish pie
1 egg yolk mixed with 1 teaspoon water
1 cup mangoes or 1 cup other chutney

Steps:

  • Combine sauce ingredients in a small bowl.
  • Place a wok over high heat until hot. Add oil, swirling to coat sides. Add meat, onions and green onions and cook, stirring, until meat is browned and just cooked through, about 5 minutes. Add sauce and cook, stirring, until sauce boils and thickens slightly. Remove from heat and let filling cool.
  • Preheat oven to 375°F Roll out pastry on floured board to a thickness of 1/8 inch. Using a 3-inch round cookie cutter cut out 20 circles. For each turnover, place 2 teaspoons filling on half of a round, moisten edges of dough with water, then fold other half over to enclose filling. Crimp edges to seal.
  • Place turnovers 1 inch apart on lightly oiled baking sheets; brush with egg yolk mixture. Bake until golden brown, 25 to 30 minutes. Serve warm with chutney on the side.

I found these on another website and made them for snacks for the Superbowl. They were very well received and incredibly easy. Everybody dipped them in ketchup and barbeque sauce and they tasted like little Cheeseburger appetizers! They were simple and delicious!

1 lb ground beef
1 (1 ounce) package dry onion soup mix
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
3 (8 ounce) packages refrigerated crescent dinner rolls

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375' In a medium skillet, cook the hamburger until done, drain.
  • Stir in soup mix and cheese.
  • Separate crescent dough.
  • Place a tablespoonful of meat mixture in center of each triangle, fold over and seal edges.
  • I use a small fork and go around and crimp the edges.
  • Place on ungreased baking sheets and bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Makes 30 appetizers.

3/4 cup butter or shortening, cold and sliced
1/2 tsp salt
2 cup flour
1/4 cup ice cold water
Instructions for filling and baking turnover is below, in the directions.

Steps:

  • Mix flour and salt in bowl. Cut in butter or shortening and mix well. Add water, 1 tbsp at a time until forms into a dough consistency. Wrap in saran wrap and place in refrigerator for 20-30 minutes. Take out of wrap and place on lighly floured surface. Flour your rolling pin. Roll the dough out until it is no thicker than 1/4 inch, a little thinner is perfect. Using a dough press, lid or glass, cut dough into 6 inch circles. TO MAKE TURNOVERS: 1.Preheat oven to 425 degrees 2. On lightly floured surface, roll out dough and cut into 6 in. circles 3. Place 2-3 tbsp filling in center of circle. 4. Brush the entire edge with water. Fold into half circle. Press edges firmly. Press the edges with a fork to seal well. 5. Arrange on dampened baking sheet, brush with egg wash 6. With a knife, cut several slits in tops of each turnover 7. Sprinkle with turbinado sugar. Bake in teh upper 1/3 of the oven, 12-15 minutes until puffed and golden.

A French Canadian holiday tradition gets a cocktail party makeover. Serve with Chili Sauce as a cocktail or serve hot with a pork or beef gravy for dinner. Makes 40 plus cocktails. Recipe taken from Canadian Living Holiday Baking Fall 2006. Well worth the effort. I've made these many times and have always recieved great reviews.

2/3 cup mashed potatoes
12 ounces ground lean pork
1/2 cup onion, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 stalk celery, finely chopped
1 cup mushroom, diced
1/2 cup chicken stock
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1/2 teaspoon thyme
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1 bay leaf
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup butter or 1/2 cup margarine, cold
1/2 cup lard, cold
1 egg
2 teaspoons vinegar
ice water

Steps:

  • Pastry:.
  • In a bowl wisk flour with salt. Using a pastry blender cut in cubed butter and lard until mixture resembles fine crumbs with a few larger pieces.
  • In liquid measure, whisk egg and vinegar; add enough water to make 2/3 cup. Drizzle over dry ingredients, stirring briskly with a fork until ragged dough forms.
  • Press into 2 discs.
  • Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate until chilled, about 30 minutes.
  • (Make-ahead: Refrigerate for up to 3 days. Makes enough for 2 9" pie crusts.
  • Tourtiere turnovers:.
  • In a large skillet, saute pork over medium-high heat, breaking up with fork until no longer pink, about 6 minutes. Add onion, garlic, celery,mushrooms,chicken stock,salt,pepper,thyme,cloves,cinnamon and bay leaf; bring to a boil.
  • Reduce heat, cover and simmer until almost no liquid remains, about 10 minutes.
  • Uncover, and cook until no liquid remains, another 5 minutes.
  • Discard bay leaf and stir in potatoes.
  • Let cool.
  • Divide pastry in half.
  • On floured surface roll out each to scant 1/4" thickness.
  • For cocktail use 3" round cutter or for main course use 5" round cutter.
  • Cut out circles, rerolling if necessary.
  • For cocktail use 1 TBSP of pork mixture or for main course turnovers use 2 TBSPs of pork mixture.
  • Place pork mixture in center of each circle. Lightly brush edge with water: fold over to create a half moon shape.
  • Press edge with a fork to seal.
  • Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
  • Arrange racks on top and bottom third of oven.
  • Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • In a small bowl whisk 1 egg yolk with 1 TBSP water to brush over filled pastry
  • Continue until all pastry and pork is used up.
  • Place close together on prepared pans and brush with egg wash and cut steam vents in centers.
  • Make-ahead: Freeze until firm, about 15 minutes. Layer between waxed paper in airtight container and freeze for up to 2 weeks.
  • Bake at 425 degrees for 15 minutes.
  • Reduce heat to 350 degrees; exchange cookie sheets top to bottom and bottom to top oven racks.
  • Bake for an additional 15 minutes.

8 3/4 cups flour
5 eggs
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup milk
1/2 teaspoon salt
6 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 lbs mozzarella cheese, grated
2 eggs
1/4 cup minced parsley
salt, pepper to taste
sesame seeds (optional)

Steps:

  • Mix filling ingredients together.
  • Set aside.
  • Melt butter and shortening together.
  • Mix all dough ingredients except vegetable oil.
  • Knead.
  • Add vegetable oil and knead again.
  • Let rest 3 hours, covered.
  • Divide into 10 balls, cover and let rest 10 minutes.
  • Open each ball with fingers to size of dinner plate.
  • Place filling over half of circle.
  • Bring end of dough over filling to form large turnover.
  • Press edges to seal.
  • Cover and let rise one hour.
  • Brush tops with one beaten egg mixed with one tablespoon milk.
  • Sprinkle with sesame seeds.
  • (optional).
  • Bake on ungreased baking sheets in preheated 375F oven 40-45 minutes.
  • This freezes well after baking.
