7 HEALTH BENEFITS OF SWEET CHERRIES - PREVENTION
From prevention.com
Email [email protected]Published Jul 3, 2019Estimated Reading Time 4 mins
- They’re a healthy way to tame your sweet tooth. Dark sweet and Rainier cherries are bursting with sweetness, but unlike a cookie or ice cream cone, these treats have zero added sugar.
- They’re a yummy way to get more fiber. It’s not always easy to get the recommended 25 to 30 grams of fiber per day. But with 3 grams of fiber per cup, these little fruits are a delicious way to get closer to your goal—and reap all of the benefits that come with it.
- They act like anti-inflammatories. Got achy muscles or joints? Sweet cherries just might become your new sweet source of pain relief. Research shows they’re rich in anthocyanins, a group of polyphenols that fight tissue inflammation the same way that meds like ibuprofen and naproxen do.
- They’ve got covert cancer-fighting agents. Oxidative stress and inflammation can raise the risk of diseases like cancer. But sweet cherries are rich in antioxidants like ellagic acid, anthocyanins, and vitamin C—which appear to offer some protection, says Goodson.
- They can reduce the chance of gout attacks. If you’re among the more than 8 million Americans who suffer from this painful form of arthritis, you may want to reach for sweet Northwest cherries more often.

- Packed with nutrients. Cherries are small stone fruits that come in a variety of colors and flavors. There are two major categories — tart and sweet cherries, or Prunus cerasus L. and Prunus avium L., respectively.
- Rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds. The high concentration of plant compounds in cherries may be responsible for this fruit’s many health benefits.
- Can boost exercise recovery. Research shows that the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds in cherries may help relieve exercise-induced muscle pain, damage, and inflammation (6, 9).
- May benefit heart health. Increasing your intake of nutrient-dense fruits like cherries is a tasty way to protect your heart. Many studies show that diets rich in fruits are associated with a reduced risk of heart disease (12).
- May improve symptoms of arthritis and gout. Due to their potent anti-inflammatory effects, cherries may reduce symptoms of arthritis and gout, a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid that can lead to extreme swelling, inflammation, and pain in your joints.
