Love Swedish meatballs? Here we've transformed them into a burger that kids will adore - choose beef or pork mince, the flavours will be the same

500g lean beef or pork mince
1 onion , coarsely grated
1 egg , beaten
25g dried breadcrumbs
grated nutmeg
¼ tsp garlic powder
burger buns , sliced cheese, lettuce, sliced tomato and lingonberry sauce (optional), to serve

Steps:

  • Tip the mince, onion, egg, breadcrumbs, nutmeg and garlic powder into a large bowl and generously season with black pepper. Mix everything together using your hands, then shape the mixture into six patties. Transfer to a plate, cover and chill for 1 hr or up to a day.
  • Heat a barbecue to medium or until a thin layer of coals has turned grey. Cook the burgers for 10 mins, turning occasionally, until lightly charred and cooked through. Top with sliced cheese during the final 2 mins of cooking time, if you like.
  • Serve the burgers in the buns topped with the lettuce, tomato and lingonberry sauce, if you like.

The original hamburger, these are served like a flattened meatball with some steamed string beans and salad. I also like to use this recipe to make Swedish meatballs (but omit the paprika). My Aunt in Hamburg, Germany taught me this recipe and I've been making them ever since. Serve with steamed string beans and tossed salad. Or serve on a Kaiser roll with lettuce, tomato, pickled cucumbers, finely sliced deep fried onions and curry ketchup.

1 Kaiser roll
⅔ pound ground beef
⅓ pound ground pork
1 onion, finely chopped
¼ cup chopped fresh parsley
1 egg
1 teaspoon Hungarian hot paprika
salt and ground black pepper to taste

Steps:

  • Soak Kaiser roll in a bowl of water for 10 minutes. Drain, squeezing out excess water, and crumble into a large bowl.
  • Mix crumbled roll with ground beef, ground pork, onion, parsley, egg, paprika, salt, and black pepper until well blended. Shape meat into large flattened meatballs.
  • Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium heat; fry meatballs until browned and no longer pink in the center, about 5 minutes per side.

This recipe is different from my other Swedish Burger recipe in that it is made and served with fried onions and cream gravy over mashed potatoes. Kind of like meatballs only in a bigger form!

1/3 cup dry breadcrumbs
1 tablespoon salt
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup cream
1 lb ground lean pork
1 egg
2 tablespoons chopped parsley (or scallions)
1/2 cup margarine or 1/2 cup butter
3 medium onions
1 cup cream

Steps:

  • Soak bread crumbs and seasonings in water and ½ cup cream for 10 minutes.
  • Add pork, egg and parsley.
  • Mix well until blended.
  • Shape into 8 round flat patties.
  • Melt half of margarine in large skillet.
  • Fry patties about 4-5 minutes on each side over medium heat.
  • Place on warm platter and keep warm.
  • Peel and thinly slice onions.
  • Sauté in remaining margarine until soft and golden about 12-15 minutes.
  • Spoon onions over burgers and keep warm.
  • Pour 1 cup cream into frying pan.
  • Cook, stirring down the sides for about 4-5 minutes until it starts to thicken.
  • Season with salt and pepper.
  • Pour over burgers and serve immediately, preferably over mashed potatoes.
