Here's a beverage that'll really hit the spot. Filled with tangy goodness, it quenches your thirst any time of year. I like to use tree-ripened lemons and oranges that are so abundant here in Florida.-Martha Schwartz, Sarasota, Florida

Number Of Ingredients 8

Ingredients

4-1/4 cups water, divided
1 cup sugar
3/4 cup lemon juice (about 4 lemons)
3/4 cup orange juice (about 3 oranges)
2 teaspoons grated lemon zest
1 teaspoon grated orange zest
Ice cubes
Lemon slices, optional

Steps:

In a small saucepan, bring 1-1/4 cups water and sugar to a boil. Reduce heat. Simmer for 10 minutes; cool. , Transfer to a pitcher; add lemon and orange juices and zests. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour. , Stir in the remaining water. Serve over ice. Garnish with lemon if desired.

Ingredients

2 cups water
1 cup sugar
8 cups ice
4 ounces vanilla-infused vodka, recipe follows*
1 cup fresh lemon juice
1 lemon, sliced into rings
1 lime, sliced into rings
1 liter vodka
2 vanilla beans

Steps:

In a small saucepan, bring water and sugar to a simmer. Cook until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and let cool.
In a large pitcher, fill with ice. Stir in simple syrup, vodka, juice, lemon and lime slices.
*for kid-friendly version, omit alcohol.
Split beans lengthwise and add to vodka bottle. Let infuse overnight in a cool dark place. Strain into another sterilized bottle.

Remove wide strips of zest from 2 lemons with a vegetable peeler (do not remove the pith). Make 2 cups simple syrup (recipe below), adding the lemon zest before heating. Let cool, then pour into an ice-filled pitcher. Stir in 1/2 teaspoon salt, 2 cups each fresh lemon juice and water, and some lemon slices.
Simple Syrup: To make 2 cups simple syrup, bring 1 1/2cups each sugar and water to a boil, stirring until dissolved. Let cool.

5 lemons
5 limes
5 oranges
3 quarts water
1-1/2 to 2 cups sugar

Steps:

Squeeze the juice from 4 each of the lemons, limes and oranges; pour into a gallon container. , Thinly slice the remaining fruit and set aside for garnish. Add water and sugar to the juice mixture; mix well. Store in the refrigerator. Serve over ice with fruit slices.
