Get a feel for the chainsaw. Fill the fuel tank with high-quality, low-sulfur diesel fuel. Check the oil level by unscrewing the cap on top of the engine.
Prepare the chainsaw. Now you are ready to turn over your Stihl chainsaw! If you are using a pull cord starter: Hold onto one end of the pull cord tightly and give it two or three tugs until there is enough tension.
Put on protective gear. You can also try starting it without choking it at all by just pulling on the starter cord until it starts running smoothly.
Make sure everything is in good working order. The MS 251 also has an ergonomic handle which makes it comfortable to hold while you are cutting through tough branches and logs.
Turn on the gas and prime the system. Check the fuel. The chainsaw should be stored with a full tank of fuel. This is because the fuel absorbs moisture from the air, which can lead to starting problems when you try to use it.
Set the brake and choke. Check your bar oil level. The MS 251 has a small reservoir just above its engine crankcase that holds 10 ounces (300 milliliters) of bar oil.
Start your chainsaw the right way. Make sure you check this reservoir regularly during use and refill it as needed with SAE 30 motor oil or equivalent.
Warm-up. Turn your ignition key on by rotating it counterclockwise about 90 degrees until it stops moving forward or backward (depending on what type of ignition system your saw has).
