I have craved these for weeks and it took me that long to find them in her collection. Grandma has been gone for two years and I miss her baking so much. I couldn't find the recipe because she called them Delicious Drop Cakes but they are cookies.

1/2 cup butter
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 egg
1/2 cup raisins
3/4 cup nuts
1 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon allspice
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 cup hot water
1 teaspoon vanilla

Steps:

  • Cream butter and sugar.
  • Add well beaten egg.
  • Sift flour and spices.
  • Add raisins and nuts.
  • Mix together nuts and raisins in flour.
  • Slowly add flour, spice, nuts and raisins to egg, butter and sugar.
  • Add quickly baking soda dissolved in hot water.
  • Mix well until all liquid comes together.
  • Drop from spoon on greased pan.
  • Bake 10 minutes at 350. Watch, till slightly browning on the bottom edge.
  • These might take a tad longer in your oven, mine cooks high. This is just a guesstimate because Grandma just had Bake as the next instruction so time and heat was a guess for me. They are nice and soft and I have double the recipe without any problems.

Great for breakfast - use your bread machine, or mix and knead by hand. Time is estimated preparation time/cooking and doesn't include dough rising time.

2 teaspoons fast rising yeast
2 cups white strong bread flour
1 1/2 tablespoons dried powdered milk
1/4 cup sugar
1 egg
1 lemon, zest of, finely grated
1/4 cup soft unsalted butter
1/3 cup warm water, plus
1 tablespoon warm water
1/4 cup raisins
1/4 cup chopped roasted/salted cashew nuts
1/2 cup powdered sugar (optional)
1 tablespoon lemon juice (optional)

Steps:

  • Place ingredients into bread maker following the order in your machine instructions; If you have a raisin dispenser put the raisins and cashews in it, or add when instructed by machine beeps
  • Roll out risen dough onto a floured surface into a circle, approximately 14-15" across, cut into 8-10 pie shaped pieces
  • Take a piece of dough and starting at rounded end roll dough towards point
  • Place on pan, point underneath, cover leave to rise until doubled
  • Bake at 400º for 14-18 minutes until golden
  • If making by hand, place the yeast, flour and water into a bowl; Stir this with a wooden spoon, stir in milk powder, sugar, egg, lemon rind and soft butter; When mixed, add the raisins and chopped cashews, then knead for about 5 minutes; Leave to rise until dough is doubled; Follow rolling/baking instructions
  • Dribble with glaze when cooled

This filling came from a recipe for breakfast buns from Sunrise Cookbook put out by the National Reye's Syndrome Foundation. It works well in this adaptation.

1 cup raisins
3/4 cup water
1/4 cup orange marmalade (or apricot preserves)
2 tablespoons flour
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon butter
2 teaspoons fresh lemon rind, grated
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg, fresh grated
1 tablespoon sugar
1 egg
2 (8 count) cans Pillsbury Refrigerated Crescent Dinner Rolls

Steps:

  • Combine in a saucepan raisins and water, bring to a boil, then simmer 5 minutes.
  • Add next ten ingredients (marmalade to nutmeg).
  • Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thick.
  • Cool enough to be just warm to touch. If too hot will start cooking the crescents too quickly.
  • Heat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Open and unroll crescents. Separate.
  • Place one tsp of filling on crescent and spread out leaving small border on all sides. Rollup from wide side to tip.
  • Place tip-side down on a very lightly oil sprayed cookie sheet.
  • Beat egg with 1/2 tsp water and brush crescents. Sprinkle sugar lightly over tops.
  • Bake 12-15 minutes or until lightly brown. Watch carefully as to not burn the bottoms.
  • These are wonderful served warm.

  • In small bowl, mix butter and cinnamon. Separate dough into 8 triangles. Spread each triangle with cinnamon butter. Sprinkle each with 1 tablespoon of the raisins. Roll up, starting at shortest side of triangle, rolling to opposite point. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Curve into crescent shape.
  • In small bowl, stir powdered sugar and 1 tablespoon of the milk. Add more milk as needed until thin enough to drizzle. Drizzle over cooled crescents.
