30-MINUTE SPICY SHRIMP MASALA

30-Minute Spicy Shrimp Masala image

Learn how to make a quick and easy spicy shrimp masala that's perfect to serve with rice or with warm naan. It's an Indian inspired recipe that's sure to please!

Provided by Marzia

Categories     30 Minute Meals

Time 30m

Number Of Ingredients 14

1/4 cup oil (yes, 1/4 cup!)
3 roma tomatoes, diced
1 tablespoon garlic paste
2 tablespoon grated ginger
1 jalapeno, seeded and minced
1/3 cup water
1/2 teaspoon EACH: coriander powder, turmeric powder, AND red pepper flakes*
1 1/2 teaspoon cumin powder
16 ounces shrimp, peeled and deveined*
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 teaspoon fenugreek leaves, crushed between fingers
1/2 teaspoon garam masala
2 teaspoons chaat masala*
chopped cilantro, cooked basmati rice or naan, for serving

Steps:

  • make the masala: Heat the oil over a large sauté over medium-high heat. Carefully add the tomatoes, so the oil doesn't splatter. Stir the tomatoes around and allow them to cook for several minutes until they cook down into a thick paste, about 8-10 minutes. Add the garlic paste, ginger paste, and jalapenos and let cook for 1 minute or until nice and fragrant. Add the seasonings: coriander, turmeric, red pepper flakes, and cumin. Stir the masala and add the water so it doesn't burn.
  • cook the shrimp: Allow the water to dry up, about 5 minutes and add the shrimp. Let cook for 2-3 minutes stirring so the shrimp are coated with the tomato masala. Season with 1/2 teaspoon salt, fenugreek leaves, garam masala, chaat masala, turn the stove off and add the lemon juice. Stir the shrimp masala and decorate with chopped cilantro. Serve warm with basmati rice or naan!

Steps:

  • Heat a large skillet over medium high heat. Add extra-virgin olive oil, 2 turns of the pan, garlic, red pepper flakes and shrimp. EASY SPICY GARLIC THAI SHRIMP

Easy Spicy Garlic Thai Shrimp image

Thanks to a simple marinade and a quick toss in a skillet, these shrimp are seared to tender perfection and coated in a sticky-sweet spicy sauce.

Provided by Jordan Cord

Categories     Main

Time 15m

Yield 4

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 lb. raw shrimp
1/4 cup chopped green onion
olive oil for cooking
2 tablespoons fish sauce or soy sauce
2 tablespoons of sesame or olive oil
2 tablespoons honey
1 tablespoon red pepper flakes
1 inch hunk of ginger, grated
5-6 cloves of garlic, minced

Steps:

  • Mix ingredients for the marinade in a large bowl. Add shrimp and toss to coat. If desired, allow to marinate in refrigerator for up to 4 hours. It's not necessary, but obviously the shrimp will be more saturated with the marinade.
  • Heat 2 tablespoons of oil on medium in a large cast iron skillet [wok or non-stick skillets will work, too]. Add green onion and sauté until soft.
  • Add shrimp and cook for 4-6 minutes until shrimp are cooked through. They should look white and start to curl up. Don't overcook - they will become rubbery and tough.

SPICY GUATEMALAN SHRIMP

Spicy Guatemalan Shrimp image

In Guatemala, this dish is called Pepián Rojo con Camarones. It's a spicy stew-like main dish featuring fresh shrimp that's simmered in a tomato-based broth with vegetables and chile peppers for extra flavor and heat.

Provided by Vickie Parks

Categories     Seafood

Time 50m

Number Of Ingredients 22

1 medium onion, quartered
3 clove garlic, minced
2 dried pasilla chiles
1 dried ancho chile pepper (or 1 diced poblano pepper)
1/2 cup sesame seeds
4 medium tomatoes, quartered
1 jalapeno pepper, seeded
5 sprig(s) fresh cilantro
1/2 tsp sea salt
1 to 2 Tbsp water
2 large carrots, diced
1 large zucchini, diced
1 large chayote, diced
1 cup corn
4 cups low-sodium chicken broth or stock
1 lb medium-size shrimp or prawns, peeled and deveined
1 tsp salt, or to taste
1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
OPTIONS, FOR SERVING
3 cups cooked rice, for serving
6 warmed tortillas, for serving (optional)
1 large lime, sliced into 6 wedges (for garnish)

Steps:

  • 1. In a medium skillet, sauté the onions, garlic, pasilla and ancho chiles about 2 to 3 minutes per side or starting to brown and the onion is lightly charred. Remove; set aside.
  • 2. Add sesame seeds to the skillet, cover skillet, and toast about 2 minutes or just starting to brown lightly.
  • 3. Place browned chile mixture, toasted sesame seeds, tomatoes, jalapeno peppers, whole cilantro sprigs, and sea salt in a blender, and puree with just enough water to produce a smooth, thick paste. Set the paste aside.
  • 4. To a stockpot or Dutch oven, add the carrots, zucchini, chayote, corn and enough broth to just cover the vegetables. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, stir in the blended chile paste, and let simmer, uncovered, for 20 minutes.
  • 5. Add shrimp, cilantro and salt, and stir to combine. Simmer for 5 minutes more. Shrimp should be pink and vegetables should be tender but still have a slight crunch to them.
  • 6. Serve immediately with rice. And, if desired, add a warmed tortilla to each each serving (most families would use corn tortillas but flour tortillas can be used instead). Garnish servings with a lime wedge and chopped cilantro sprinkled on top, and serve immediately.
