Our family likes these breadsticks because they are soft and chewy. I like to make them when I am in a hurry because they rise quickly.

Yield 18 breadsticks

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 cup warm water
3 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup oil
3 cups bread flour
2 1/2 teaspoons yeast

Steps:

  • Make dough using your favorite method- bread machine, mixer or by hand.
  • Roll out into a 10x12 inch rectangle.
  • Cut into strips about 3/4 inch wide.
  • Give each strip a twist and place on a greased cookie sheet.
  • Let rise for at least 20 minutes or more if you have time.
  • Bake at 375 for 10-15 minutes.
  • Brush with butter and sprinkle with garlic salt and parmesan cheese.

Number Of Ingredients 6

2 tablespoons butter
1-1/2 cups finely chopped onions (about 2 medium)
1/4 teaspoon paprika
1 loaf (1 pound) frozen bread dough, thawed
1 large egg, lightly beaten
1 tablespoon sesame seeds

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, heat butter over medium heat. Add onions; cook and stir until tender. Stir in paprika; cool completely. , On a lightly floured surface, roll dough to a 16x14-in. rectangle. Spread onion mixture down 1 half of the rectangle. Fold dough lengthwise in half over onion mixture, forming a 16x7-in. rectangle; seal edges., Cut dough lengthwise into thirty-two 1/2-in.-thick strips. Twist each strip 2 or 3 times. Place 2 in. apart on greased baking sheets. Cover with kitchen towels; let rise in a warm place until almost doubled, about 45 minutes. Preheat oven to 375°., Brush breadsticks with beaten egg; sprinkle with sesame seeds. Bake 13-16 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from pans to wire racks to cool.

12 small red onions , see tip, below
1 ½ tbsp olive oil
1 ½ tbsp balsamic vinegar
2 tbsp maple syrup

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Cut about 1cm off the top and bottom of each onion and peel off the skin. Nestle the onions in a small roasting tin or casserole dish, so that they fit snugly together in a single layer. Drizzle over the oil and balsamic vinegar, season, then get your hands in and toss the onions to coat. Cover the tin with foil and roast for 40 mins until tender.
  • Remove the foil and drizzle over the maple syrup, then return to the oven, uncovered, for 20-30 mins, until the onions are caramelised.

½ cup warm water (110 degrees F to 115 degrees F)
½ cup warm milk (110 to 115 degrees F)
¼ cup butter, softened
1 tablespoon sugar
1 ½ teaspoons salt
2 large eggs eggs
3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons cold water
2 tablespoons sesame seeds
1 tablespoon poppy seeds

Steps:

  • In a skillet, saute onion in oil until tender; cool. In a large mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Add the milk, 1 egg, butter, sugar, salt, 1 egg and 1 cup flour. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes. Stir in onion and enough remaining flour to form a soft dough.
  • Turn onto a floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, 6-8 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.
  • Punch dough down. Let stand for 10 minutes. Turn onto a lightly floured surface; divide into 32 pieces. Shape each piece into an 8-in. rope. Place 2 in. apart on greased baking sheets. Cover and let rise for 15 minutes.
  • Beat cold water and remaining egg; brush over breadsticks. Sprinkle half with sesame seeds and half with poppy seeds. Bake at 350 degrees F for 16-22 minutes or until golden brown. Remove to wire racks.

4-1/2 to 5 cups all-purpose flour

Poppy seeds, sesame seeds, Italian seasoning, coarse salt and/or shredded Parmesan cheese, optional

Although my heritage is strictly Dutch, my family loves Italian food. These seasoned breadsticks are a great accompaniment to lasagna or pizza.

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt, divided
1 package (1/4 ounce) quick-rise yeast
2 to 2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2/3 cup warm water (120° to 130°)
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
3 tablespoons butter, melted
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon paprika
Italian seasoning or grated Parmesan cheese, optional

Steps:

  • In a food processor, combine the sugar, 3/4 teaspoon salt, yeast and 2 cups flour. Cover and process for 5-10 seconds. While processing, gradually add warm water and oil in a steady stream. Process for 1 minute or until smooth and elastic. Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of water or flour if needed. , Turn onto a floured surface. Roll into a 15x12-in. rectangle. Cut into 12 strips. Fold each strip in half lengthwise; twist each strip several times. Pinch ends to seal. Place 2 in. apart on a greased baking sheet. , In a small bowl, combine the butter, garlic powder, paprika and remaining salt. Brush some over dough.
