THE BEST SLOPPY JOES
This is weeknight comfort food at its finest. We created a homemade sauce that is tangy and flavorful but also quick and easy. We used both ketchup and canned tomato sauce for lots of tomato-y zip and just a touch of brown sugar for a bit of sweetness and slight caramel finish. Green bell pepper is a key addition; it really enhances the other ingredients, elevating the flavor profile into the realm of a true sloppy joe.

Steps:
- Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onions and peppers and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and starting to caramelize in some spots, 6 to 7 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute. Stir in the beef and cook, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon or spatula, until it is browned, no longer pink in the middle and cooked through, 7 to 8 minutes.
- Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, red wine vinegar, paprika, cayenne pepper, 1 teaspoon salt and a generous amount of black pepper and simmer, stirring occasionally, until thickened and heated through, 5 to 6 minutes. Spoon the meat onto the toasted buns.
SLOPPY JANES
Steps:
- Spray a large skillet with nonstick spray and bring it to medium-high heat on the stove. Add turkey and sprinkle with steak seasoning and salt. Cook and crumble until it's mostly cooked, about 8 minutes.
- Reduce the heat to medium. Add onion, bell pepper, Worcestershire sauce, and vinegar. Mix it well and continue to cook and crumble until the meat is fully cooked, about 5 minutes.
- Reduce the heat to low. Add tomato sauces, tomato paste, and sugar. Stir well. Stirring occasionally, cook until it's hot, about 5 minutes.
- Toast the buns, if desired. Evenly distribute the mixture among the bottom buns and then finish off with the tops of the buns. Enjoy!
SLOPPY JOES
Sloppy joes are a simple, American staple the whole family can get stuck into. Add a dash of spicy chipotle or smoky barbecue sauce to the minced beef filling for some zing.

Steps:
- Heat the oil in a deep frying pan, then fry the onion, pepper and garlic for 8-10 mins until softened. Add the mince, breaking it up with a wooden spoon as you go, and stir until it browns all over. Tip in the tomatoes and chipotle, or barbecue sauce, and add a little seasoning. Simmer for 10-15 mins until the sauce has thickened.
- Put the cheese slices on top of the mince and cover with a lid for 2 mins to let it melt into the sauce. Pile into the buns with the crispy onions, and lettuce on the side for scooping up the extra sauce.

- Plan ahead. There’s no better way to handle cravings than planning your meals and snacks ahead of time. If you have a healthy meal and snacks packed and ready for you at lunchtime and in the afternoon, you’re far less likely to grab a leftover piece of pizza, order French fries, or eat the sweets someone brought in to the office.
- Shop the perimeter. The perimeter of the grocery store typically includes the produce, dairy, meat, and fish sections. This is where you’ll find real foods, rather than highly processed food products.
- Eat healthy fats. One of the most common nutrition myths is that fat makes you fat. In fact, your body needs fat! However, there are many different types of fat.
- Eat enough protein. Protein makes you feel full, often more so than other macronutrients like carbs. Fill your diet with healthy sources of protein including
- Try fruit. Fruit has sugar, but it has a lot of vitamins, antioxidants, and water, too. It also contains fiber, which slows and balances out the effects on your blood sugar.
- Taste the rainbow. Add some new and different foods to your routine. The more varied your diet, the less likely you will get bored or crave junk food. For example, add a new green to your salad (mustard greens, anyone?)
- Think about junk food differently. A 2013 study showed that when people were trained to look at and interpret one of their most-craved junk foods in a negative light, desire for it lessened.
- Focus on adding healthy foods. A study in the journal Nutrients showed that focusing on the positive side of healthy eating is more effective than focusing on the need to remove junk food.
- Work on stress management. There’s almost always an emotional component behind cravings. Sure, you really need the brownie because you like the flavor.
- Get more sleep. Most people don’t get nearly enough sleep. And while you’re probably aware of the effects on your mood or energy level, you may not know that lack of sleep is also thought to play a big role in junk food cravings.
