COUNTRY-STYLE SAUSAGE HASH

Country-Style Sausage Hash image

This will become a family favorite for breakfast or, really, any time of the day. Using frozen potatoes cuts down on prep time, while Jimmy Dean Premium Pork Sausage adds a rich layer of flavor.

Provided by JimmyDean

Categories     Breakfast Sausage

Time 40m

Yield 4

Number Of Ingredients 9

4 tablespoons canola or vegetable oil, divided
3/4 (1-pound) package Jimmy Dean Premium Pork Sausage
4 cups frozen hash brown potatoes, thawed
½ cup diced white onion
1 cup diced green bell pepper
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
4 fried eggs
1 avocado, sliced

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of oil over medium-high heat for about 30 seconds. Add Jimmy Dean sausage and cook for 8 to 10 minutes until browned, stirring frequently to break up the sausage into small pieces, then drain. Remove the sausage and set aside.
  • In the same skillet, heat the remaining oil for 30 seconds. Carefully add the potatoes and fry until they begin to turn golden brown, 10 to 15 minutes. Stir occasionally so that the potatoes do not stick or burn.
  • Add onions, peppers, salt, and pepper, and cook for an additional 5 minutes. Add the sausage and stir well.
  • Serve with the fried eggs and avocado slices on top to get more nutrition from the meal.

  • Heat a large deep skillet over medium high heat. Cook and crumble the sausage, then remove to a small bowl. Leave the grease in the skillet and add enough olive oil to make about a tablespoon's worth. Add the potatoes and toss to coat. Sprinkle generously with spices and stir again. Pour 2 tablespoons of water into the pan and cover with lid. Let cook for 5 minutes. Stir well, scraping the bottom of the pan as needed. Add an additional 2 tablespoons of water, if the pan is dry. Cover again and cook 5 minutes longer, until the potatoes are fork tender.
  • Uncover the pan and add the cooked sausage and mushrooms. Stir and continue cooking for a few minutes, until the mushrooms begin to soften. Add the cabbage and the beans and toss together. Cook for just a couple more minutes, until the cabbage turns bright green and is barely softened. Sprinkle with additional spices as the cabbage is cooking. Taste and adjust the spices as desired. Enjoy!

  • Creamy Sausage Gravy. People are always raving about Hardee’s sausage gravy, and it makes me wonder if they really don’t realize how simple it is to make.
  • Sausage Hash Brown Cups. These eight-ingredient hash brown cups make excellent appetizers, but you can also serve them for breakfast if you prefer. The center of each one is a thick, juicy ball of Jimmy Dean’s sausage.
  • Sausage Quiche. If you’re looking for something new to help spice up your breakfast routine, give this cheesy sausage quiche a try. It’s similar to the sausage hash brown cups, but on a much larger scale.
  • Sausage Veggie Casserole. Sausage veggie casseroles are another hearty breakfast option that’ll keep you full for hours. They combine plenty of filling protein, nutrient-rich veggies, and yummy cheese for an all-in-one meal that the whole family should enjoy.
  • Sausage Cheese Soup. This creamy, garlicky soup is thick, full of succulent chunks of sausage, and has a rich, earthy flavor from the cumin, beer, garlic, and onions.
  • Sausage Sloppy Joes. I’ll be honest, I had never considered turning sausage into sloppy Joes until I ran across this recipe (or one similar to it) a couple of years ago.
  • Sausage Bolognese. Sausage bolognese uses more ingredients than any other recipe on the list, and it takes a bit of time to make. You might be asking yourself then, “Why should I bother with it?”
  • Cheesy Stuffed Sausage Pasta Bake. Everything you need to know about this 45-minute meal is right there in the name: It’s supremely cheesy (ricotta, mozzarella, and Parmesan) and contains plenty of pasta and sausage.
  • Sausage Combo Pizza. You didn’t think I forgot about sausage as a pizza topping, did you?! Of course not! You can’t have a list of Jimmy Dean sausage recipes and not include at least one pizza.
  • Sausage Lover’s Dip. Because most people are familiar with sausage Rotel dip, I decided to add a different one to this list: the sausage lover’s dip.

  • Start by scrubbing and thoroughly washing the potatoes. Dry them and then using a fork, poke holes throughout the potatoes. Place in the microwave for 5 minutes, flip them over and microwave for another 3-5 minutes. Remove and allow to cool.
  • Meanwhile, prep the sausage and veggies. Coin the sausage. Chop the peppers and onion (Dice for smaller veggie bites). In a very large dutch oven skillet, add the olive oil and heat over medium-high heat until sizzling. Add in the coined sausage and cook for a 4-5 minutes until lightly browned. Remove to a plate.
  • Add in the butter, keeping the heat at medium-high. Stir the butter around and add in the veggies -- the chopped peppers and onions. While those begin cooking, dice the potatoes (remove skins if desired, I like to leave them on). Add the potatoes in and cook, stirring occasionally, until the veggies are crisp tender and the potatoes have a nice crisp exterior, about 4-7 minutes. Add in the garlic and seasonings: dried parsley, Italian seasoning, paprika, and salt + pepper to taste. (If you want eggs, make 4 "wells" in the hash and crack the eggs into the wells (Add eggs before veggies are finished so they don't get too browned). Fry until the whites are set/eggs are to your liking and remove + serve immediately).
  • If desired top with fresh parley or green onions. Add any additional salt and pepper to taste. Enjoy! (If you make this hash without eggs, it stores well and warms up for leftovers great!)
