10 FUN FACTS (THAT YOU PROBABLY DIDN'T KNOW) ABOUT SãO ...

From galloparoundtheglobe.com
Estimated Reading Time 9 mins
  • São Miguel is the largest of a total of nine islands that make up the Azorean archipelago. The island measures 62.1 km in length and 15.8 km in width at its widest point, and with a total area of 744.7 square kilometres, making it a similar sort of size to Anglesey in Wales, here in the United Kingdom.
  • São Miguel is the only place in the world where pineapples are grown in greenhouses. At least, that’s what it says on their information leaflet! Pineapples were introduced to the island around 1850, as a replacement crop for oranges.
  • São Miguel is home to the only tea plantation in Europe. Ok, so it’s got nothing on Kerala, but that’s still a pretty impressive claim to fame. Tea was another of the crops that was introduced to the island following the demise of the production of oranges.
  • There are web cams dotted around the island so you can do live weather checks via the “Spot Azores” app. Our host at The Nook Hostel actually told us about this app and we used it all the time.
  • You can try “cozido nas caldeiras” – a traditional dish that’s cooked in volcanic heat for seven hours, one metre below ground. Down by the north side of Furnas lake, south of town, amidst an area of geothermal activity, are the caldeiras (volcanic craters), where for generations people have come to cook the famous cozido nas caldeiras.
  • On a Wednesday you can rock up at any one of the island’s lighthouses and get a free guided tour – from the Lighthouse Keeper himself. We discovered this fact completely by accident.
  • There is an abandoned 5-star hotel perched on an isolated mountaintop, which makes for some great urban exploration. Hotel Monte Palace opened its doors on 15 April 1989.
  • If you love cats, head to one of the island’s miradouros (viewpoints) Being a cat lover I was rather dismayed that we’d seen none of them on our wander around Ponta Delgada on the first day of our trip.
  • You’ll find some incredible street art in Ponta Delgada. Just like Tarapoto in northern Peru, Ponta Delgado was not somewhere I expected to find street art, let alone pieces that were so creative, quirky and unique.
  • São Miguel has been manufacturing pottery since 1862. You can tour the factory and showrooms in Lagoa. At Ceramica Vieira is the family-run business, currently in its fifth generation.

7 SãO MIGUEL RESTAURANTS YOU HAVE TO TRY - MARLENE ON …

  • Tasca Mané Cigano. I didn’t know this place, nor had I ever heard of it. But when I asked my friend Vasco Lello, Chef of the Príncipe Real restaurant, in Lisbon, who had been in São Miguel recently, this was the first place he recommended me for the best Azores food.
  • Associação Agrícola de São Miguel. A classic of the classics in São Miguel. The Associação Agrícola de São Miguel is a society of local producers who opened a restaurant on the premises, which became one of the island’s ex-libris.
  • A Tasca. A Tasca was another great tip from my friend Vasco and is right in the center of Ponta Delgada. This space offers a tavern atmosphere, with wood tables and chairs and decoration that fits the style, however, the service is of a first-class restaurant.
  • Tony’s. Another classic of the Azores food is the Furnas stew. To tell you the truth, it’s always the one I go to when I’m visiting, so I don’t have a comparison term.
  • Caloura Bar. On my first trip to São Miguel it was in Caloura that I stayed and I only have good things to say about this place. Beginning with Caloura Bar, a restaurant right on the sea, next to a small fishing port.
  • A Casa do Abel. In Agua de Pau, on the way to Caloura, the A Casa do Abel was born recently. From all the restaurants in São Miguel, this was one of the great finds of this trip.
  • O Galego. It was the last of the São Miguel restaurants that I visited on this trip and, of course, I ordered a nice piece of steak for the farewell. The restaurant is modest and is in the neighborhood of Praia dos Santos, in Ponta Delgada.

TOP 12 THINGS TO DO ON SAO MIGUEL ISLAND, THE AZORES

From tripsavvy.com
Estimated Reading Time 9 mins
  • Enjoy Stunning Views Over a Multi-Colored Lake. The views over the Sete Cidades lake are some of the most famous in the Azores, and Vista do Rei (the King’s View) viewpoint is the most popular place to do it.
  • Eat Lunch Cooked by a Volcano. Basing yourself in the pretty town of Furnas is a great alternative to staying in the capital of Ponta Delgada, but even day trippers can enjoy the biggest highlight of the area: eating a meal cooked, quite literally, by a volcano.
  • Be Amazed by the Beauty at Boca do Inferno. Boca do Inferno translates as the Mouth of Hell, but on a sunny day, this viewpoint is likely to be one of the most beautiful places you’ve ever visited.
  • Bask in Hot Ocean Water. Looking for an unusual experience? Take a trip out to Ferraria on the island’s west coast, and you can swim in ocean water that’s been heated up by hot water springs.
  • Visit a Lake Inside a Volcano. High up in the mountains, inside the crater of an extinct volcano, lies the gorgeous Lagoa do Fogo (Fogo Lake). You’ll get spectacular photos from the roadside viewpoint on a clear day, but if you’ve got the time and mobility, it’s worth the steep half-hour descent to visit the lake as well.
  • Bathe in Forested Hot Springs. Halfway down the winding road from Lagoa do Fogo en route to Ribeira Grande lies one of the island’s biggest attractions.
  • Visit the Oldest Lighthouse in the Azores. On the remote east coast of Sao Miguel lies Farol do Arnel, the oldest lighthouse in the Azores. It’s only open on Wednesdays, but worth visiting on other days of the week because of its stunning location.
  • Cool off Under a Waterfall. While the Azores doesn’t suffer from the extreme hot weather of mainland Portugal, it can still get pretty warm at times—which gives the perfect excuse for cooling off under a waterfall.
  • Road Trip Along the Coast. One of the most enjoyable parts of any trip to Sao Miguel is simply driving the island’s roads. Most of the winding, well-paved routes see little traffic and have attractive beaches and stunning viewpoints around nearly every corner.
  • Relax in Terra Nostra Park. Dating back to 1775, the picturesque surroundings of Terra Nostra park in Furnas is the perfect place to relax on a sunny day.
