EXAMPLES OF WRITING AN APPRECIATION SPEECH

From examples.com
  • The formality of the event. If it is simply as a casual and non-serious event, then you can lighten up the mood you are going to give thanks to. For example, you could say “I can’t express how grateful I am to have all of you here with us tonight.”
  • Talk about your esteem for the people honoring you. Do not forget that you did not just win this award because of your sheer hard work and responsibility.
  • Tell a funny or poignant story. We all have stories to tell. By adding a story in a speech, it acts as an icebreaker to give the people an opportunity to understand on what you have experienced along the journey into accepting your award.
  • Mention the names of people who helped you. It is assuring that there are several people who have helped you on your journey to where you are right now.
  • End it on a high note. Start strong and end strong. When you finish listing people you want to thank, the speech is just about over. End it by saying thanks once more, and repeating how sincerely grateful you are.
  • Write out your notes. Appreciation speeches are surprisingly short. Try not to make it too lengthy, otherwise, you would just bore your audiences to death.
  • Time yourself. There are some events that have a specific time limit for their speeches while there are some events that do not have any. When you’re faced with a time limit, you can always try to tie yourself in order to see as to whether you have exceeded the required time or not.
  • Practice in front of someone who makes you nervous. It’s nice and all to practice in front of a mirror. But there are times, that it will not be enough.
  • Work on looking and sounding natural. Review your speech and see if there is anything that you need to work on. If it is just going to be some wordings then and there, try working on that to make your speech sound more natural.
  • Calm your nerves right before the speech. Inhale and exhale. Breathe in and breathe out. It is OK if you get nervous just minutes away from delivering your speech.

  • Know Your Audience — And Your Place. Your speech will depend on a variety of factors. But the most important ones to consider are the setting and the crowd.
  • Create an Outline. Whether your appreciation speech is long or short, it’s always a good idea to craft an outline ahead of time. This will help you make sure you don’t forget to mention anything you want to cover.
  • Grab People’s Attention with Gratitude. Start with a strong opening line. In a more formal speech, a quote about gratitude can be an excellent way to set the tone.
  • Be Personal and Specific. In casual and formal speeches alike, you should feel free to be specific. If you’re giving a speech in honor of one person, you can list all of the things they do that deserve appreciation.
  • Practice Makes Perfect. For a casual speech like an appreciation toast, you can probably get away with speaking off the cuff. But any kind of pre-planned appreciation speech definitely benefits from repeated practice.
  • Time Yourself. When you’re practicing your speech, you should also be timing yourself. This means you should have a stopwatch going while you read your speech aloud.
  • Keep Your Notes Handy. Even if you’ve practiced your speech until it’s practically etched into your brain, you always want to keep notes or an outline with you.
  • Do a Test Run in Front of an Audience. Practicing for a speech on your own is important. But once you feel more comfortable with the speech, you should practice in front of someone.
  • Weed Out Any Trouble Spots. Every time you practice your speech, you should be refining it until you can’t improve it any further. One of the big things you should be looking out for is your usage of filler words or speech disfluencies.
  • End On a Good Note. Above all else, remember that this speech is intended to be a positive thing. An appreciation speech should make someone’s day.
