RUSSIAN HOT CHOCOLATE

Russian Hot Chocolate image

It's a hot chocolate coffee drink. Can also be made iced. The salt brings out the sweetness of the sugar. If you have sweet chocolate, you can use that and skip the sugar. Adapted from the New Settlement Cookbook.

HOT CHOCOLATE-RASPBERRY RUSSIAN

Hot Chocolate-Raspberry Russian image

There's nothing like a cup of hot cocoa to warm you on a cold night... Oh, wait, there is: Hot cocoa with vodka! I decided to add raspberry flavored vodka (I used Absolut- it's the only brand I can find in Lisbon with vanilla and raspberry flavors) to my hot chocolate since I've always been a fan of the chocolate-raspberry combo. I suppose one could add vodka and a raspberry liquer, or experiment with other desired flavors.

Time 3m

Yield 1 mug, 1 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 3

1 pint prepared hot cocoa (I had run out of cocoa so I used Cadbury's drinking chocolate plus milk)
2 -3 ounces raspberry vodka (approximately)
whipped cream (optional)

Steps:

  • Add vodka to hot chocolate/cocoa (if you want more of a kick you could try adding plain vodka, so the raspberry flavor won't overpower the chocolate).
  • If desired, garnish with whipped cream. Note: I I have tried combining the hot chocolate with vanilla vodka and Kahlúa and obtained equally delicious results!

  • Mishka Kosolapy (Clumsy Bear) If you decide to buy candies in Russia, go straight for these; at the very least because they've been the most popular since Soviet times.
  • Rot Front bars. Once, when I was a child, I ate so many of these that I couldn’t look at one again for… a couple of days. Then, predictably, I couldn't contain myself and ate some more because they're so delicious.
  • Kara-Kum. Kara-Kum is actually the name of a desert in Turkmenistan and literally means "black sand". The candies are indeed dark in color, covered with a chocolate glaze.
  • Zolotoy Klyuchik (Golden Key) In the USSR these toffees were the most popular candies, above all because of their low price. There was one hitch - not everyone managed to get the whole wrapper off the sticky toffee, and some people chewed the candy along with bits of paper.
  • Korovka. This fudge with a liquid fondant center and condensed milk flavor is a memorable part of every Russian's childhood. If you like a more liquidy and sticky filling, then buy these candies fresh.
