American Chop Suey Casserole With Cheese Topping image

Delight all you and your family's comfort food cravings with this delectable American chop suey casserole topped with shredded cheese.

Number Of Ingredients 12

8 ounces elbow macaroni
1 1/4 to 1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef
1 cup chopped onion
1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper
1 (14.5-ounce) can diced tomatoes
1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon sweet paprika
1 bay leaf
Kosher salt, to taste
Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Steps:

  • Heat the oven to 350 F/180 C/Gas 4.
  • Lightly butter a 2 1/2- to 3-quart baking dish or spray it with nonstick cooking spray .
  • Bring a large saucepan of salted water to a boil over high heat. Add the macaroni and cook following the package directions. Drain well and set aside.
  • Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. When the oil is hot add the ground beef, onion, and bell pepper. Cook until the onion is tender and the beef is no longer pink, stirring frequently.
  • Add the tomatoes, tomato sauce, garlic powder , sugar, paprika, and bay leaf. Taste and add kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, as needed. Bring the sauce to a simmer. Reduce the heat and simmer for about 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Remove the bay leaf and combine the sauce with the drained macaroni. Mix thoroughly.
  • Transfer the American chop suey mixture to the prepared baking dish .
  • Sprinkle the shredded cheese over the casserole.
  • Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the casserole is hot and cheese has melted.
  • Serve and enjoy!

1 small onion, chopped
1/4 tsp pepper
28 oz can chow mein vegetables,undrained
1 small can chopped water chestnuts, drained
16 oz can bean sprouts, undrained
10 oz can cream of mushroom soup
10 oz can cream of chicken soup
10 oz water , using soup can
1 c uncooked rice
3 Tbsp soy sauce, low sodium
3 oz can chow mein noodles,for crunch

Steps:

  • 1. Lightly brown beef and onions together in a skillet. Using a 4-quart baking dish, combine the vegetables, soup, water,rice,pepper,bean sprouts, water chestnuts,and soy sauce.. Stir in prepared meat mixture. Cover the dish and bake at 350^ for 1 hour and 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, adding water if necessary. Uncover and sprinkle with the noodles. Return to oven and bake uncovered for another 10 minutes.

1 tablespoon vegetable oil
2 lbs beef stew meat
1 white onion
3 stalks celery
8 cups water
1/3 cup soy sauce
1 tablespoon beaded molasses
14 ounces bean sprouts, drained
8 ounces water chestnuts, drained
5 tablespoons cornstarch
1/2 cup water

Steps:

  • Heat oil in large pot over high heat.
  • Brown beef stew meat mixing in cut up onions and celery.
  • Add water, soy sauce and beaded molasses.
  • Simmer for 3 hours.
  • Add bean sprouts and water chestnuts.
  • Mix cornstarch and water and add to chop suey, heat until thickens.
  • Serve over rice.

1/2 cup Minute Rice (uncooked)
3/4 cup chopped onion

1 1/2 cups warm water
1 cup chow mein noodles

3 tablespoons butter
1 medium yellow onion, chopped
1 green bell pepper, stemmed, seeded, and chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 pound ground beef
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon dried basil
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
Kosher salt
1 (14.5-ounce) can diced tomatoes
1 (14.5-ounce) can tomato sauce
1/4 cup tomato paste
2/3 cup tomato juice
Pinch of sugar
1 pound elbow macaroni

Steps:

  • 1. Heat the butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onion and bell pepper and cook, stirring occasionally, until soft, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, for about 1 minute. Then add the ground beef and continue to cook, stirring and breaking up the chunks of meat with a spoon. Cook until the meat is no longer pink, about 7 minutes. Sprinkle the herbs and pepper over the meat, add salt to taste, and mix in well.
  • 2. Add the canned tomatoes with their juices, the tomato sauce, paste, and juice. Add sugar to taste. Simmer while you cook the pasta.
  • 3. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil over high heat. Add the macaroni and cook, stirring occasionally, until al dente. Drain. Mix the macaroni into the chop suey. Serve hot.

CLARA'S GROUND BEEF CHOP SUEY

This was my mother's (Clara) recipe. I have no idea where she got it but this was a staple at our house for years. All of us children (5) have tried to make this recipe taste like hers. We can come close but it never tastes as good as when she made it. Maybe it was the love. She died at the age of 86 and I'm posting this recipe in her memory.

2 slices bacon
1 onion, chopped

Steps:

  • Cook rice and celery together in water until done (about 20 min.); drain.
  • Dice bacon and fry.

1 -2 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
1 (14 1/2 ounce) can beef broth
1/4 cup low sodium soy sauce
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground mustard
2 garlic cloves, minced
1/2 cup onion, chopped
1 cup snap peas
1 cup celery, chopped
1 cup red bell pepper, chopped
1 cup broccoli
1 (14 ounce) can bean sprouts, drained
1 (15 ounce) can baby sweet corn cobs, drained and cut in half (whole spears)
1 (5 ounce) can sliced water chestnuts, drained
2 -4 tablespoons cornstarch

Steps:

  • Heat oil in large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Add beef; cook until browned.
  • Add beef broth, soy sauce, ginger and mustard; mix well.
  • Lower heat.
  • Add fresh vegetables; cover. Simmer for 1 hour (more or less, depending on the quality of the beef).
  • Add canned vegetables; recover. Simmer for a half hour.
  • If necessary, use cornstarch to thicken (mix with water in a separate bowl and add to chop suey a little at a time).
  • Serve with white rice or chow mein noodles.
