- Prepare. Locate outdoor water supply valve, which is usually under the kitchen sink or in the basement. Once you locate the specific pipe that runs to your outside faucet, turn off the water supply using the shut off valve.
- Remove the Faucet Turn Handle. Use the correct size and shape of screwdriver to take off the faucet turn handle. Set the handle and screw on your tray so you do not lose any parts.
- Remove the Spigot. Take the faucet spigot, or tap, off by gripping and turning it with your crescent wrench. Check the washer inside the spigot.
- Replace the Washer and Test. Dig out the old washer with a flat-bladed screwdriver, and put in a new washer. Reattach the valve and handle, restore the water supply temporarily from inside the house.
- Access the Faucet Valve Stem. Release the handle and spigot from the faucet again (as in Step 4). Use the crescent wrench to reach and turn the packing nut to release it.
- Replace the Washer on the Faucet Valve Stem. Find the washer on the bottom end of the valve stem, and take it off. Replace the old valve stem washer with a new one.
- Reinstall the Faucet Valve Stem. Put either the new or old faucet valve stem back into the faucet hole, and reattach the packing nut by using your crescent wrench.
- Reattach the Spigot and Faucet Handle. Reattach the spigot, turning it carefully to avoid warping or bending it. Screw the handle back onto the faucet once more.

- Spray lubricant onto the faucet where it connects to the pipe. Lubricant will help to loosen any rust that may have formed on the threads.
- With your non-dominant hand, hold the pipe wrench on the water pipe to keep it still. At the same time, slowly turn the pipe wrench that is connected to the faucet counterclockwise until the faucet is loosened.
- Go to the home improvement store and take the old faucet with you. Purchase a new faucet that meets the same specifications as the old one.
- Wrap two to three layers of Teflon tape around the threads in a clockwise direction. Teflon tape seals the connection to ensure that no water leaks out.
- Screw the new faucet onto the pipe in a clockwise direction by hand until the faucet is tightened.

- Shut off the Water. To stop the potential flow of water that will occur when you work on your faucet, you'll need to find the main valve that shuts the water off.
- Remove the Existing Faucet. You'll need to unscrew the faucet from the water pipe that feeds into the faucet. This will require that you hold the pipe from turning.
- Prepare the Pipe to Receive the New Faucet. Use a stiff wire brush to clean rust, corrosion, and debris from the threads of the pipe. When the pipe threads are clean, wrap two layers of plumber's tape around them.
- Attach the New Faucet. Begin screwing the new faucet onto the pipe. Be sure the faucet threads are not crossways with the pipe thread. If they are, you will not be able to completely tighten the new faucet.
- Check the New Faucet Connection. At the street valve, turn the water on again. Then return to the new faucet and check to be sure water is not leaking from the new connection.

- Turn the shutoff valve for the outside faucet to the closed position. Open the outside faucet all the way to relieve any pressure in the pipes and make sure the water flow has completely stopped.
- Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the section of the faucet, just behind the packing nut. Clamp a second adjustable wrench onto the connection between the faucet and the pipe that goes into the building, to keep the entire faucet assembly from spinning.
- Slide the valve assembly out of the water pipe, by pulling on the valve handle. Remove any nuts on the valve assembly, using either an adjustable or socket wrench.
- Remove the washer from the valve assembly, using the blade on a flat head screw driver. Unscrew the compression washer on the end of the valve assembly, and pry it away from the valve assembly, using the flat head screw driver.
- Replace the worn washers, and tighten the screws and nuts you removed from the valve assembly. Reinsert the valve assembly into the pipe, and tighten the valve assembly using the adjustable wrench.

- Turn Off The Water Supply. The water shut off valve must be located. It is often found in the underground utility box next to the street. The water supply is turned off completely.
- Empty The Water Pipe. The valve of the faucet valve is removed. The water content present in the pipe must be completely removed. The water pipe must be completely dry.
- Remove The Water Pipe. The crescent wrench is placed below the faucet to hold the water pipe in its place when the faucet is removed. The crescent must be tightened around the pipe to avoid it from turning.
- Remove The Water Faucet. The water pipe is loosened to remove the faucet easily. Next the pipe wrench is attached to the water faucet and then the wrench is turned in the counter-clockwise direction.
- Clean The Pipes. The water pipe ends and the threads are cleaned using a stiff bristled brush to remove rust. Rusting causes a problem when installing a new water faucet.
- Install The New Faucet. The new outdoor water faucet is threaded and turned in the clockwise direction until it becomes tight. The pipe wrench must be used to tighten the new faucet firmly in place.
- Turn On The Water Supply. First close the outdoor water faucet and then turn on the water supply. The new water faucet valve is opened and water is allowed to run through the faucet.
HOW TO REMOVE A STUCK OUTSIDE WATER FAUCET | HUNKER
From hunker.com
- Close the shut-off valve on the faucet's water line inside the house. Turn the shut-off handle completely clockwise. Turn on the faucet, if possible, to release any water pressure.
- Remove the screw holding the faucet handle in place and pull off the handle. Spray penetrating lubricant on all sides of the nut that sat behind the faucet's handle and allow the lubricant to soak into the nut's threads for a few minutes.
- Clamp an adjustable wrench to the nut and turn counterclockwise. If the nut won't turn, try tightening it by turning clockwise slightly, which may break apart any corrosion between the nut and the faucet.
- Strike the side of the nut with a hammer in an attempt to jar loose the corrosion or any buildup sitting in the threads. Heat up the nut with a hair dryer for five minutes or more if the nut still doesn't turn counterclockwise.
- Cut the nut on either side using a close-quarters hacksaw, then remove the nut. Once you remove the nut, pull on the faucet spout to remove the valve stem assembly from the water pipe.

- Unscrew the handle set screw, which is at the base of the handle or on top of it under a small, round cover which is easily removed by hand. An Allen wrench or screwdriver removes these screws.
- Pull the handle off. If this part sticks, attach a handle puller tool to the faucet and gently rotate the end to pull the handle off gradually. This tool also helps remove handle screws which are stuck.
- Remove the stem with a bath socket. Slide the bath socket over the stem and turn counterclockwise to remove on valve faucets. Or, if it is a cartridge faucet, remove the cartridge retaining nut.
- Replace the valve stem and tighten with a bath socket wrench. Or, replace the cartridge and retaining nut. Slide the handle back on and tighten the handle screw with an Allen wrench or screwdriver.
