  • Legal Considerations Know what it is legal for an unlicensed homeowner to do to their own equipment. There is no national or federal law regulating what a private citizen can do with their own air conditioner.
  • Checking the System Perform routine maintenance first. Before you recharge your AC, it is very important that you perform standard maintenance on it.
  • Determining What You Need Determine the type of refrigerant you need for the AC system. This can be done by consulting the equipment's operating guide, often found inside the electrical control box or the air handler unit.
  • Recharging Your AC Take the following steps. To recharge the refrigerant in your air conditioner, first shut down your AC unit, then follow the steps below

HOW TO RECHARGE YOUR CENTRAL AIR CONDITIONER ...

From doityourself.com
  • Inspect the Unit. Using your air conditioner’s manual, locate the compressor of your unit. It will look like a metal cylinder and have two lines coming off it.
  • Plug the Service Valve. Locate the service valve inside your Freon kit. It will be the large connector valve found amongst the kit’s other contents.
  • Plug the Tap Valve. Your Freon kit also contains a small valve connector. That valve is called the tap valve. The tap valve must be plugged into the remaining compressor line to your AC’s compressor.
  • Add Freon. To add Freon to the lines, you need to attach the Freon container to the two valves that you have just installed. Follow the instructions set in your Freon kit to secure the container between the two valves.
  • Charge Freon. Now that you’ve finished installing new refrigerant to your home AC unit, you need to let the Freon flow in to it. To do so, simply turn on the unit and turn it up to the highest setting.

HOW TO CHARGE A HOME AC COMPRESSOR WITH R-22 - HUNKER

From hunker.com
  • Remove the caps covering the outside AC unit's R-22 refrigerant valves. These are found on the pipes entering the outside unit. Some valve covers twist off by hand, and some require an adjustable wrench.
  • Screw an R-22 manifold gauge's left-hand hose onto the valve on the large refrigerant pipe. Only charge an AC system with gauges designed for R-22, as stated on the left-hand gauge.
  • Purge the air from the manifold's hoses. Open each manifold handle for one second. The air in the hoses will exit the manifold's middle hose.
  • Turn the R-22 jug upright, so its valve faces upward. Open the R-22 jug's valve. This keeps the liquid refrigerant away from the valve. Advertisement.
  • Let the system's refrigerant pressures equalize. The needle on the left-hand gauge will stop falling, and the needle on the right-hand gauge will stop rising when the system has equalized.
  • Look at the psi reading on the left-hand gauge. If the gauge reads below 60 psi, then open the left-hand gauge's handle for 30 seconds. Allow the pressure to equalize.
  • Place a thermometer on the large refrigerant pipe 6 inches from the service valve. Take the thermometer's reading, called super-heat, once it has stopped dropping.
