The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want. Only a shepherd could write Psalm 23, and David was a shepherd. The Lord is the Shepherd of His people and they are His sheep; so David said, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.”
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures. The Psalmist puts rest and refreshment first because this is the way God deals with us so often. His blessings span the years.
He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness. The restored soul is then led on to another stage in God's plan for his life—“He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake” (Psalm 23:3).
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death. And now the Shepherd leads on, not only beside the still waters of rest and the righteous paths of service, but through trouble and sorrow.
