Number Of Ingredients 6

1/3 to 1/2 cup liquid such as dairy milk, almond, cashew or coconut milk
1/3 to 1/2 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
1/3 to 1/2 cup yogurt, optional
1 teaspoon chia seeds, optional but highly recommended
1/2 banana, mashed, optional
Serving suggestions: fruit (fresh or dried), nuts, nut butter, seeds, protein powder, granola, coconut, spices, citrus zest and vanilla extract

Steps:

  • Add the desired amounts of milk, oats, yogurt, chia seeds and banana to a jar or container and give them a good stir. Refrigerate overnight or for at least 5 hours.
  • In the morning, add additional liquid if you'd like. Once you achieve the desired consistency, top with fruit, nuts, nut butter, seeds, protein powder, granola, coconut, spices, zest or vanilla extract.

50g rolled porridge oats
2 tbsp natural yogurt
50g mixed berries
drizzle of honey
½ tbsp nut butter (we used almond)

Steps:

  • The night before serving, stir the cinnamon and 100ml water (or milk) into your oats with a pinch of salt.
  • The next day, loosen with a little more water (or milk) if needed. Top with the yogurt, berries, a drizzle of honey and the nut butter.

When soaked overnight in milk, oats become tender and creamy. Unlike oatmeal, the uncooked but softened oats retain a fresh flavor and, of course, they're delicious cold. Soaking dried fruit - use your favorite - alongside the oats sweetens the mixture nicely, but you can stir in additional sugar, maple syrup or honey to taste just before eating. Then, just before you dig in, top it with nuts for an irresistible crunch against the creamy oats.

1/2 cup old-fashioned oats
1/4 cup dried fruit, cut into small pieces, if needed
1 tablespoon chia, flax, poppy or sesame seeds
1 cup milk or unsweetened dairy alternative, such as almond or oat milk
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
Maple syrup, honey or brown sugar (optional)
2 tablespoons chopped or sliced nuts, toasted, if desired

Steps:

  • Mix oats, dried fruit, seeds, milk and salt in a pint jar or 2-cup airtight resealable container. Seal tightly and refrigerate for at least 5 hours or up to 5 days.
  • Uncover, stir well, and taste. If you prefer more sweetness, stir in some sweetener. Top with the nuts just before eating.

  • Guessing on the liquid-to-oat ratio. Getting the liquid-to-oat ratio down is one major key to success when it comes to overnight oats. Since overnight oats are really just oats that have been left to soften for hours in liquid — usually milk of some sort — to break down and become porridge-like, if you use too little liquid, the oats won’t be able to soften enough and get that creamy consistency.
  • Not adding a pinch of salt. As much as oats love maple syrup and brown sugar, they also love (and need) salt. Just like any other food, overnight oats needs to be seasoned properly and will frankly taste like cardboard without that pinch of salt, regardless of how much syrup you drizzle on.
  • Reaching for instant oats. Leave instant oats behind when making overnight oats. Since they are so small, they’ll actually just end up almost dissolving in the liquid.
  • Tossing all the nuts and fruits in at once. It may be tempting to stir nuts and fruit into the oats before you go to bed to make it extra easy on yourself in the morning, but try to hold back.
  • Forgetting to stir before digging in. You already stirred the oats into the liquid last night, so no need to stir them again in the morning, right? The bottom of the oats might be pretty mushy while the top still could have a little crunch left in it, which means you’ll be digging through all sorts of different textures.
