This recipe was popular in the 60's. It was one of the first tuna casserole's and is still a great comfort food today. Easy to make and has all the things that are usually on hand. This can also be made with the same size can of chicken. Sometimes I add mushrooms and english peas.

1 1/2 cups noodles
1 (10 3/4 ounce) can cream of mushroom soup
1/2 cup milk
1 (5 ounce) canned tuna, drained
1/2 cup potato chips
1/2 cup chopped onion
1 cup shredded cheese

Steps:

  • Cook noodles in unsalted water.
  • Drain noodles. Mix soup, milk and tuna with noodles.
  • Add shredded cheese and onion.
  • Pour into casserole dish.
  • Crush potato chips and sprinkle on top. Bake 15 minutes at 425 degrees.

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.

12 oz egg noodles (1 package)
1/4 cup chopped onion
2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese
1 cup frozen green peas
10 oz tuna, drained (2 5-ounce cans)
21.5 oz condensed cream of mushroom soup (2 standard cans)
4.5 oz sliced mushrooms (small can)
1/4 cup melted butter
30 butter crackers (like Ritz crushed)

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Lightly spray a 13 x 9-inch baking dish or 3-quart casserole with cooking spray.
  • Mix crushed crackers with melted butter in a small bowl; set aside.
  • Cook noodles per package directions until al dente; drain and place in a large bowl.
  • Mix in the onion, shredded cheese, peas, tuna, soup and mushrooms. Mix well and turn into prepared pan. Top with crumbs
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes or until crumbs are golden brown and casserole is bubbling around the sides.
  • Serves 6-8

4 Cups Cooked Wide Egg Noodles, cooked to al dente - see notes
1 - 7 ounce Can Tuna, Drained (see notes for types)
1 Tablespoon Butter, unsalted
1 tablespoon minced onion
1 Tablespoon Flour
1 Cup Milk
1/2 Teaspoon Salt
Dash Pepper
1/4 Pound American Cheese, shredded- (about 1 cup)
1/2 cup Peas
1/3 cup Panko Bread Crumbs
1 tablespoon melted butter

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 400°
  • Prepare baking dish (approximately 1-quart casserole dish) by buttering edges or using pam spray. Set aside.
  • Place noodles, and tuna in a mixing bowl. (Flake the tune gently so the pieces are broken apart.
  • In a saucepan, melt butter on medium-high. Then add minced onion. Cook for 2 minutes until onion is translucent.
  • Add flour while constantly stirring with a whisk. Cook for 2 minutes to cook out the powdery taste and bring out the nutty rich flavor.
  • Add milk, and continue to whisk for 5-7 minutes until mixture thickens. Then add cheese, salt and pepper to taste Cook for 2-3 minutes more until all cheese has melted.
  • Remove from heat and pour over tuna and noodles. Add peas. Stir to combine.
  • Place into a buttered baking dish -- If making ahead, cover the dish with plastic, and place in the fridge. Don't place topping on until you are ready to bake it. (see notes)
  • Stir panko and melted butter together and sprinkle over tuna and noodles.
  • Bake for 20 minutes and serve.

2 cups pasta, dried
2 (6 1/2 ounce) cans tuna in vegetable oil
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 small onion, chopped
1 (8 ounce) can mushrooms, sliced
2 tablespoons butter
1/4 cup flour
1 3/4 cups evaporated milk
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper

Steps:

  • Cook pasta as directed on package.
  • Drain tuna reserving the liquid, add lemon juice and refrigerate.
  • Meanwhile, melt the 2 tablespoons butter in large skillet over medium heat and saute the onion and mushroom slices until soft.
  • Stir in the flour until blended and cook over low heat until bubbly (stirring constantly).
  • Stir in the evaporated milk and add the reserved tuna oil and cook stirring constantly, until mixture thickens.
  • Stir in salt and pepper and adjust seasoning as needed.
  • Gently stir the tuna with the sauce and heat through.
  • Drained pasta and serve warm with the tuna and sauce mixture.
  • NOTE: Eileen said that she served it with rice instead of the pasta.

2 cans (5 ounces each) tuna in water, drained
½ cup grated cheddar cheese
1 cup potato chips, coarsely crushed
Optional: ½ cup frozen peas
Optional garnish: chopped fresh parsley

Steps:

  • Start by preheating your oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Next, you want to grease a 1 1/2 quart casserole dish then set it aside.
  • Using a large pot of salted boiling water, cook the noodles just until al dente according to package directions (about 6 minutes). Drain.
  • Now, whisk together condensed soup and milk In a large bowl then gently stir in the cooked noodles, tuna and peas.
  • Make sure to taste and season with salt and pepper, if necessary then transfer the mixture to prepared dish.
  • Sprinkle cheese on top, then crushed potato chips.

8 ounces dried egg noodles
20 ounces canned solid white albacore tuna (drained)
10 ounces cream of mushroom soup
10 ounces cream of celery soup
2 cups frozen peas
1 cup milk
1 cup French's fried onions
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon cracked pepper
½ cup butter cracker crumbs
¼ cup shredded Parmesan cheese
2 tablespoons butter (melted)
Parsley or dill (for garnish)

Steps:

  • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook noodles for one minute less than the package directions state.
  • While noodles are cooking, preheat oven to 375 degrees. Spray a 9x13 baking dish with nonstick spray.
  • Add the tuna, cream of mushroom, cream of celery, peas, milk, fried onions, garlic powder, and pepper to a mixing bowl and stir to combine.
  • When pasta is done cooking, drain, and add noodles to the tuna mixture. Stir well.
  • Pour the noodles into the prepared baking dish and bake, covered with foil, for 25 minutes.
  • While the casserole is baking, stir together the topping ingredients.
  • Remove the foil from the casserole and sprinkle the cracker crumbs over the top. Return to the oven for 10 minutes.
  • Sprinkle with fresh parsley or dill before serving.
