HOMEMADE VEGETABLE WASH/PRESERVER THAT WORKS! (SPRAY OR SOAK)

Homemade Vegetable Wash/Preserver That Works! (Spray or Soak) image

I have been using this for years don't know why I never thought of posting it here on the site earlier, this really works and works very well! no chemicals 100% natural and will remove dust and dirt and kill any little bugs and bacteria not to mention it costs only pennies to make and when used as a soak it will help preserve your veggies so that they will last quite a lot longer --- there is really no servings to this recipe so of coarse the serving amount is only estimated --- because of the fresh lemon juice any unused spray may be refrigerated until used again, I just usually use up the 1 cup and then discard the rest --- the exact amounts do not really matter a little more will not hurt, I really don't even bother to measure I just eyeball everything --- if you are using a smaller bowl then reduce the vinegar to 2 tablespoons and salt to 1 tablespoon it will work just as well :)

Time 5m

Yield 1-2 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1 tablespoon baking soda
1 cup water
1/4 cup vinegar
2 tablespoons salt

Steps:

  • For the spray; put all ingredients into a spray bottle (be careful as it will foam up) shake gently to mix, then spray on veggies or fruit allow to sit for about 2-5 minutes then rinse under cold water.
  • For soak; fill a clean sink or a large basin with cold water; add in vinegar and salt, then swish around with hands (you may also do this in a large bowl).
  • Place the fruit and/or veggies in and allow to sit for 25-30 minutes although I have even left soaking for over an hour (this will not affect the flavor at all, the vinegar cleans and the salt draws out any little bugs, dirt and other small unwanted things, it also will remove some of the wax.
  • Rinse under cold water and dry.

  • Water. To restate what the University of Maine and the FDA advise, just use water. A soak and a good scrub, using a scrub brush like this one, will do the job.
  • White Vinegar. Using white vinegar to clean produce is one of the most popular methods, and for good reason. It’s so easy! Because almost every home has white vinegar, it is an excellent option for all sorts of cleaning purposes.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar. If apple cider vinegar can detox the body, be used to condition your hair and even remove moles, no wonder we use it to wash our produce.
  • Salt. I would never have thought to use salt in a DIY produce wash, but this article claims that salt is a natural disinfectant that helps to eliminate pesticide residue!
  • Peel and Trim. Now this isn’t exactly a vegetable wash, but if your concern is the pesticide residue on the outside of the produce, then peeling and trimming the produce can take care of that!
  • Hydrogen Peroxide. This method was recommended to me by a reader, but upon further searching, it seems to be fairly popular! Step 1. Combine 1 Tablespoon of 3% hydrogen peroxide to 1 gallon of water.
  • Bleach. This isn’t my top recommended method, for obvious reasons, but also because we use a homemade bleach alternative instead of traditional bleach in the laundry – so I don’t even have bleach in the house!
  • Citrus Essential Oils. Enzymes in citrus essential oils (orange, lemon, grapefruit, etc.) contain monoterpenes, which have the ability to dissolve petroleum-based substances.
  • Castile Soap. To wash produce using castile soap and essential oils: Step 1. Combine 1 teaspoon castile soap + 7 drops citrus essential oil + 1 gallon of water.

  • White vinegar + lemon Juice. This simple fruit and veggie wash harnesses the antibacterial power of vinegar and the fresh zest and acidity of lemon juice (also a natural preservative) on your produce.
  • Baking Soda + Lemon Juice. Another great scrubbing solution you probably have sitting inside your pantry is baking soda. It’s a foamy antiseptic alternative to white vinegar, and it’s been shown to be more effective than plain water or a bleach solution at removing pesticide residues on the skin (and even beneath the skin) of apples.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar + Water. Apple Cider Vinegar has antimicrobial properties and has been proven to kill harmful bacteria like E. Coli. Although it’s a bit more expensive than white vinegar, you can also use ACV for many other things, like in homemade salad dressings, and even on your hair to promote a healthy scalp!
  • Castile Soap + Citrus Essential Oils. Citrus essential oils (lemon, orange, grapefruit, etc.) have the power to cut through and break down petroleum-based products (such as certain pesticides or waxes).
  • White Vinegar + Salt. For a more concentrated solution, you can pump up the volume on white vinegar’s bacteria-killing action! The addition of salt also acts as a natural disinfectant, helping to eliminate pesticide residue, as well as drawing out bugs and other impurities.

  • Remove produce from packaging and place in a colander in the sink. Rinse well, drain, and place into bowl(s). Use stainless steel or glass bowls for this rather than plastic which could leach chemicals into wash water.
  • Add enough water (preferably distilled/purified, if available) to cover fruits and/or veggies. You will want to keep track of how many cups of water go into the bowl(s), so you will know how much apple cider vinegar to add. Remember to leave enough room to add the correct amount of apple cider vinegar with the ability to mix everything together
  • Add 2 tbsp of Apple Cider Vinegar (with The Mother) for every 8 cups of water to each bowl. For instance, 4 cups of water would require 1 tbsp of ACV, 6 cups of water would require 1.5 tbsp ACV, etc. Mix well.
  • Let sit for 15 minutes. Stir a couple of times during that time period to ensure all areas of the produce are being washed and disinfected.

6 NATURAL SOLUTIONS TO WASH PESTICIDES OFF FRUITS & VEGGIES

  • According to The Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), 3/4 or even more of pesticide may be removed by cold water washing. Take a look below to find out more natural solutions to wash your fruits and vegetables
  • Salt water. Add 2 teaspoons of salt in warm water and let it cool, then soak the food for half an hour before rinsing with cold water. This will help remove further pesticide than cold water alone.
  • White Vinegar solution. This is another simple but effective solution, pour a tablespoon of white vinegar into a bowl of warm water, soak your foods for some minutes and then rinsing with cold water.
  • Make a natural cleansing spray with baking soda and lemon juice. You can make a simple natural cleansing spray by mixing 1 tablespoon lemon juice with 2 tablespoons baking soda in a spray bottle of water.
  • A good method to wash berries(as they are so delicate and hard to clean) You may also feel it’s difficult to wash berries, yes? Diluted fresh lemon juice can be used to clean them well, simply mix 2 cups of water with 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice and spray on your berries.
  • Natural vegetables wash with lemon essential oil. Add 2-3 lemon essential oil into filtered water in a big bowl or your sink, soak your fruits and veggies and stir them around to make sure they’re all well coated with the solution.
