Steps:
- Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs and vanilla. Combine dry ingredients and add to mixture. Stir in apples. Spoon into greased 11 x 13 pan. Bake at 350 for 45-50 minutes or until the toothpick comes out clean.
GERMAN APPLE CAKE
Untried by me. Highly recommended by Dad. This was another of my Step Mother's recipes. Look forward to making it soon, seems like a very warm, homey Autumn dessert. If you get to it before me do let me know what you think!

Steps:
- Beat the eggs, oil and vanilla until foamy.
- Mix the next 5 ingredients (sugar through salt) in a separate bowl.
- Add to egg mixture.
- Fold in apple slices gently.
- Spread into a 9x13 baking pan.
- Top with nuts.
- Bake 350°F for 40-60 minutes.
GERMAN APPLE CAKE
This is a moist and delicious cake, and very easy to make. Our church used to have an international dinner every January, and I took this one year. It was a big hit! I've made it several times since. Recipe is from The Best of Mennonite Fellowship Meals.

Steps:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- To prepare cake, cream together shortening, sugars and eggs.
- Add dry ingredients and sour cream; mix well.
- Fold in apples.
- Pour batter into greased 9" x 13" baking pan.
- To prepare topping, mix all ingredients.
- Sprinkle over cake batter before baking.
- Bake for 50-55 minutes.

NANA'S APPLE CRUMBLE
A family favorite, this apple crumble was originally my grandmother Hazel's recipe which my mom made on a regular basis. She would make two at a time to take to sick or shut-in friends, or to potlucks. There is never any left. Serve warm with French vanilla yogurt.

Steps:
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
- Spread apples in an even layer in a deep dish pie plate or 8-inch square glass casserole dish. Cover with white sugar, then top with cinnamon.
- Combine flour and brown sugar for topping in a bowl. Add butter and cut in with a pastry blender. Spread topping evenly over apple mixture and pat down.
- Bake in the preheated oven until apple mixture is bubbling and topping is browned, about 55 minutes.

This is the best German Apple Cake I have ever eaten, and it is sooo simple to make! great for picnics and birthdays, but i love it in the winter time!

- 1. In a large mixing bowl, beat the eggs, sugar, oil and vanilla. Combine the flour, cinnamon, baking soda and salt; add to egg mixture and mix well. Fold in apples and nuts. Pour into a greased 13-in. x 9-in. x 2-in. baking dish. Bake at 350 degrees F for 55-60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack.
- 2. In a small mixing bowl, beat cream cheese and butter. Add confectioners' sugar, beating until smooth. Spread over cake. Refrigerate leftovers.
