A classic whiskey cocktail made with bourbon and mint is even more fragrant when you flavor your simple syrup.

1 scant oz. minted simple syrup
2 cups crushed ice
2 oz. bourbon (we recommend Angel's Envy Port-Finished Bourbon)
Fresh mint sprig, for garnish

Steps:

  • To highball glass or silver Julep cup, add minted simple syrup, then 1 cup crushed ice, bourbon, and splash of water. Add enough of remaining ice to almost fill glass. Stir well and garnish with mint sprig.

1 cup water
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup fresh mint leaves

Steps:

  • Gather the ingredients.
  • In a small saucepan over medium-high heat, bring the water and sugar just to a boil, whisking to dissolve the sugar. Add the mint leaves.
  • Reduce the heat to a simmer and cook, without stirring, until the syrup is slightly reduced and syrupy, about 10 minutes.
  • Transfer the syrup to a small metal bowl and let stand to cool slightly, about 10 minutes.
  • Discard the mint leaves. You can use the syrup immediately, or let it cool to room temperature. Store in a covered glass jar in the refrigerator for up to one month.

The proper way to serve a mint julep is in a frozen silver goblet, but you can use glasses instead--just use the most elegant ones you have! You can make the syrup ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator for whenever the julep mood strikes you.

2 cups water
2 cups white sugar
½ cup roughly chopped fresh mint leaves
32 fluid ounces Kentucky bourbon
8 sprigs fresh mint leaves for garnish

Steps:

  • Combine water, sugar and chopped mint leaves in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil over high heat until the sugar is completely dissolved. Allow syrup to cool, approximately 1 hour. Pour syrup through a strainer to remove mint leaves
  • Fill eight cups or frozen goblets with crushed ice and pour 4 ounces of bourbon and 1/4 cup mint syrup in each. (Proportions can be adjusted depending on each person's sweet tooth). Top each cup with a mint sprig and a straw. Trim straws to just barely protrude from the top of the cups. Serve juleps on a silver platter.

1/3 cup sugar
1/3 cup water
1/2 cup packed fresh mint

Steps:

  • Bring sugar and water to a boil in a small saucepan; cook until sugar dissolves. Let cool. Meanwhile, prepare an ice-water bath. Bring a small pot of water to a boil. Add mint; cook until vibrant green, about 30 seconds. Remove from water, and transfer to ice-water bath. Drain; squeeze out excess water. Puree mint and sugar syrup in a blender until smooth. Let stand for 15 minutes. Strain; discard solids. Refrigerate until cool.

1 -2 tablespoon sugar syrup, to taste
1 1/2-2 ounces rum, to taste
2 ounces club soda, more to taste

Steps:

  • Fill a glass 1/3 full with crushed ice, and place mint leaves and sugar syrup on top.
  • Using a muddle stick or wooden pestle, mash them together for about 20 seconds.
  • Add the rum and club soda and lime juice and stir well.
  • Garnish with mint sprig, serve, and enjoy!
  • *To make sugar syrup, dissolve 1 part sugar into 1 part hot water and boil until thickened.

Remove from the heat, cool for 10 minutes, then transfer to your blender carafeIf your carafe is heat-resistant, you can skip the rest period.. Allow the syrup to cool to around 80°F. Clean the saucepan.
  • Meanwhile, combine the ice and 2 more cups of water in a large bowl and have it standing by near the cooktop.
  • In the same saucepan, bring the remaining 5 cups of water to a boil over high heat and tie the mint into a bunch with cotton butcher’s twine. When the water reaches a hard boil, dunk the mint bouquet and count to 15, then immediately plunge the mint into the ice water to stop the cooking and set the colorThis is called “blanching” and“shocking.”.
  • Once thoroughly cooled, pat the mint dry, pluck as many leaves off as possible, and add them to the cooled syrup. Then blend on medium speed until the mint is reduced to very fine pieces. Strain through a fine sieve set over a 2-cup liquid measuring cup then transfer to a plastic squeeze bottle and refrigerate for up to 2 months...or freeze forever.
